Super Mario 64 DS Multiplayer Port: Tobi Friedly Brings N64 Classic to Nintendo DS

A fan-led port of Super Mario 64 has recreated the original Nintendo 64 release on Nintendo DS hardware and added a custom cooperative multiplayer mode.

Developer Tobi Friedly published the project on GitHub, where users can download the build and find step-by-step instructions for running the game on DS systems.

The project was highlighted by outlets including Hackaday and GoNintendo.

Super Mario 64 first launched on the Nintendo 64 in 1996 and is widely regarded as a landmark 3D platformer.

Nintendo later released Super Mario 64 DS as a Nintendo DS launch title in 2004; that official remake included enhanced graphics, new levels, and additional playable characters — Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario — alongside Mario.

Friedly’s port, by contrast, aims to faithfully preserve the original 1996 N64 experience while adapting the game to DS technical constraints.

Friedly’s implementation enables cooperative play by linking two Nintendo DS systems that each run the port.

Players can explore levels together using a custom-made co-operative mode built by the developer.

Video demonstrations accompanying the GitHub repository show two DS consoles connected and sharing gameplay in real time, and Friedly documents the technical solutions he used to adapt the N64 codepath for DS hardware.

In published notes, Friedly said he plans to continue refining the port’s performance and expand its multiplayer capabilities.

He indicated the project is ongoing and that he intends to support multiplayer across additional DS consoles and add other features in future updates.

Because this release is a community-made port hosted on GitHub, it is distributed outside of Nintendo’s official channels and is not an eShop product.

The repository provides installation instructions and the technical write-up for users who want to experiment with the build on compatible DS hardware.

Friedly’s work is part of a broader preservation and modding scene that continues to revisit classic titles from the Nintendo 64 era.

By reproducing Super Mario 64’s original content and introducing cooperative functionality on Nintendo DS, the project highlights both the technical creativity of homebrew developers and ongoing interest in preserving the original N64 experience for modern audiences.
