Sonic Wings Special Set for Console Archives Release on Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5

Retro gaming enthusiasts can prepare for takeoff as Hamster Corporation brings back the classic vertical shooter, Sonic Wings Special, for modern audiences via its acclaimed Console Archives series.

Following their recent release of the NES strategy favorite Nobunaga’s Ambition, Hamster is now set to resurrect Video System’s beloved 1996 shoot ’em up, with Sonic Wings Special landing on PlayStation 5 on March 12, 2026, and launching for Nintendo Switch 2 the following day.

Sonic Wings Special holds a unique place in gaming history as the first entry in the iconic Aero Fighters (Sonic Wings in Japan) series developed specifically for home consoles.

Originally debuting on the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation for Japanese audiences, with a later PAL release by Phoenix Games in 2004, the title gave fans direct control over Project Blue—a group of elite multinational pilots.

Players battled to undermine the machinations of the secretive Fata Morgana organization, whose superweapon threatened global devastation. Not just a simple port, the Console Archives edition integrates a host of modern enhancements tailored for today’s gaming hardware.

According to the official announcement, both PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions will preserve the hallmark features of Hamster’s retro releases.

Gamers can expect customizable control layouts, rapid-fire options, multiple save states, and adjustable screen presentation, including CRT-style filters for a genuinely nostalgic touch.

Pricing is set at $11.99—mirroring other recent Console Archives reissues such as Cool Boarders—ensuring affordability for longtime fans and newcomers alike. Sonic Wings Special is celebrated for including content spanning earlier entries in the franchise, incorporating stages, adversaries, and pilots from Sonic Wings, Sonic Wings 2, and Sonic Wings 3.

The game also inspired the 1997 arcade title Sonic Wings Limited (known as Aero Fighters Special in North America), and has previously been made available on PlayStation Network across the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita platforms, as well as on Android in 2012. The developer describes the game as featuring “12 aero fighters and 24 fighter jets—united now!” Players are immersed in a branching narrative with a multi-ending system, as they select from a diverse cast of global pilots and are tasked with restoring peace to a world in peril.

Hamster continues to reinforce its reputation for curating high-quality classic releases, ensuring that both preservationists and new players can experience the innovations and excitement that defined the shoot ’em up genre’s golden era.

With the arrival of Sonic Wings Special on Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5, a new generation of gamers is poised to join the skies for an aerial showdown steeped in retro authenticity and modern playability.
