Fragrant Story on Nintendo 3DS Receives Free 'Papaya's Path' DLC and Limited Physical Release in 2024

Despite the closure of the Nintendo 3DS eShop, indie developers continue to support Nintendo's beloved handheld.

In a notable move, developer William Kage has released a significant free DLC expansion for his tactical RPG, Fragrant Story.

This new content, titled 'Papaya's Path,' becomes available in December 2023 and adds substantial depth to the game's strategic systems on the Nintendo 3DS platform. Papaya's Path offers players between 6 to 10 hours of new gameplay, dependent on individual skill, with completionists able to invest up to 20 to 30 hours to fully experience all the content.

The free DLC not only increases Fragrant Story to Version 1.2 but also introduces multiple new story campaigns, fully voiced cutscenes, and a host of additional features.

Players can expect new challenge battles, characters, abilities, gear, enemies, bosses, expanded terrain options, a comprehensive world map, an enlarged soundtrack, and various other enhancements. Expanding further on the commitment to physical collectors, William Kage has announced a limited run of physical copies set for release in January 2024.

This new batch of Fragrant Story cartridges represents the final units created during a 2022 production run, which required re-processing due to a supplier issue.

As these cartridges ship with version 1.0 of the software, owners will need to update to access the newly launched Papaya's Path expansion. In addition to the updated game, both the standard and collector's edition physical boxes are receiving significant upgrades.

The standard edition will include both of the game's soundtrack albums on CD and as a digital download.

Meanwhile, the collector's edition boasts further enhancements, now shipping with both albums, an extra poster, and two additional tarot cards to commemorate the release.

A physical strategy guide, featuring exclusive artwork, will be available on the same date, providing in-depth insights and a valuable resource for fans and newcomers alike. Summarizing the developments, William Kage shared in an official statement that the physical release utilizes the remaining stock of 2022 cartridges, which have undergone a strict re-processing protocol to ensure quality.

He also emphasized the importance of updating the physical copies for optimal access to all new features.

With this substantial free expansion and limited edition release, Fragrant Story joins the small but passionate group of Nintendo 3DS titles continuing to receive developer support in the post-eShop era.
