Retailers and online stores worldwide are reporting temporary sellouts of physical copies for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time following the announcement of a limited-edition textured foil cover for the recently announced Switch 2 release.
The special packaging — revealed during a Nintendo Direct presentation — has triggered stronger-than-expected demand for boxed copies and related 40th-anniversary Zelda hardware bundles in some regions.
The original Ocarina of Time launched on Nintendo 64 in 1998 and has since been reissued in multiple forms, including a 3DS remake in 2011.
The franchise remains one of Nintendo’s best-known properties, and physical special editions have historically driven collector interest for big Zelda milestones.
IGN Brazil spoke with Gamer Hut commercial director Ricardo Vieira about the company’s physical sales performance.
Vieira told the outlet that Gamer Hut’s initial procurement plan pre-dated Nintendo’s reveal of the textured foil cover and that the announcement changed the demand picture substantially.
He said the retailer felt well prepared based on its original forecast, but when the special packaging was shown during Nintendo Direct he requested a significant increase to their order.
Production constraints, however, prevented an additional allocation beyond the first print run.
Multiple online retailers have reported similar, temporary stock shortages for the boxed release.
Nintendo’s own regional storefronts carry notices for pre-orders in some territories: pre-purchases currently are expected to receive stock from the first print run that includes the textured foil cover, but the company warns that the special packaging will not be available indefinitely and pages will be updated when the variant is no longer in stock.
The situation highlights the continuing influence of packaging and limited-run physical extras on pre-order behavior, particularly for legacy Nintendo properties tied to anniversary promotions.
For consumers, the message from retailers is straightforward: if a textured foil or limited box is a priority, early pre-order windows are the most reliable way to secure one while first-run stock remains available.
Verified context: Ocarina of Time originally released for Nintendo 64 in 1998 and received a notable remake for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.
