In an interview with Polygon, Aonuma and fellow Zelda developer Hidemaro Fujibayashi discussed team roles and the creative choices behind the remake effort.
Ng is a Nintendo developer whose early credits include work on Wii Fit Plus, and who later contributed to planning on Tears of the Kingdom for the Nintendo Switch.
Tears of the Kingdom launched on May 12, 2023, and its development team has been widely cited inside Nintendo as a training ground for newer staff to take on larger responsibilities.
Aonuma told Polygon that Ng’s performance on that project made him a natural candidate to direct the Ocarina of Time remake.
Paraphrasing Aonuma’s remarks for clarity: he said Ng was heavily involved in planning on Tears of the Kingdom and repeatedly demonstrated an ability to identify and resolve development challenges proactively and decisively.
Aonuma added that Ng later presented design ideas for future projects, which convinced him that Ng had the vision and leadership necessary to direct a remake.
On the decision itself, Aonuma described appointing Ng as a positive move, calling it a rewarding experience and affirming that elevating Ng to director was the right choice for the project.
The appointment underscores a broader pattern within Nintendo of promoting staff who demonstrate both technical skill and creative initiative.
Industry observers have noted Nintendo’s track record of nurturing in-house talent across hardware generations and franchise teams; that continuity is part of how long-running series like The Legend of Zelda maintain their design DNA while evolving for modern platforms such as the Nintendo Switch.
The Ocarina of Time remake remains a high-profile project for Nintendo and fans of the series.
With Ng at the helm and senior figures like Aonuma and Fujibayashi involved in oversight and guidance, the development team brings a mix of experience from past Nintendo titles.
Nintendo has not announced a release date for the remake.
