Nintendo has officially confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will not come bundled with the Expansion Pass downloadable content, a detail that has drawn attention ahead of its notable release on the upcoming hardware platform.
As the Nintendo Switch 2 prepares to launch, anticipation has been mounting for enhanced versions of hallmark titles like Breath of the Wild, a game that redefined open-world design and achieved over 30 million units sold worldwide since its original 2017 release by Nintendo EPD.
In a direct statement to IGN, a representative from Nintendo of America clearly stated, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC.
That DLC is available as a separate purchase.” This means that players looking to experience the full breadth of content, including expansions like The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad, will need to acquire the Expansion Pass independently, even after purchasing the updated Switch 2 Edition.
The Expansion Pass currently retails for £17.99 or $19.99 via the Nintendo eShop.
There are several paths for players upgrading to the Switch 2 Edition.
Newcomers and long-time fans can purchase The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at retail or digitally for £66.99 / $69.99.
Those who already own the original Switch version have the option to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack for $9.99.
For subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online, this Upgrade Pack is available as a complimentary bonus, underscoring Nintendo’s push to enhance the value of its online membership service.
The upcoming Switch 2 Edition will deliver notable technical upgrades.
Nintendo confirms support for improved frame rates and resolution, faster load times, HDR capability, and new features such as integration with the Zelda Notes service via the Nintendo Switch smartphone app.
These enhancements are poised to further elevate the critically acclaimed experience for both new and returning players on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
The Expansion Pass for Breath of the Wild remains a substantive addition, comprising two major packs and a trio of exclusive treasure chests.
The first expansion, The Master Trials, introduces the challenging Trial of the Sword, Hero’s Path Mode, Master Mode, the Travel Medallion, Korok Mask, and several hidden items honoring classic Zelda games.
The Champions’ Ballad, the second major DLC, delivers new story-driven content and rewards including the ability to summon the Master Cycle Zero and discover the Ancient Horse Gear, alongside additional series-themed collectibles.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be released worldwide, both physically and digitally on the Nintendo eShop, starting June 5, 2025.
This definitive edition aims to introduce the legendary adventure to a new generation of Nintendo Switch hardware while offering performance and quality-of-life improvements for dedicated fans.
