Few classic JRPGs have inspired as much lasting admiration as Chrono Trigger.
Developed by Square Enix and originally launched for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, Chrono Trigger is regularly hailed as a cornerstone of Japanese role-playing game design, owing to its innovative narrative structure, memorable characters, and pioneering combat system.
With successful remakes of flagship titles in the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series revitalizing those franchises on modern hardware like the Nintendo Switch, fan demand for a Chrono Trigger remake has only intensified.
In a recent interview with Game Reactor, Yuji Horii—renowned creator of the Dragon Quest franchise and pivotal figure in Square Enix's RPG lineage—offered clarity on the studio’s awareness of these longstanding requests.
Horii acknowledged he has received an overwhelming number of appeals from the community regarding a Chrono Trigger remake.
Emphasizing his personal enthusiasm for the project, Horii remarked that although the gaming landscape has welcomed remakes of Dragon Quest III, as well as I & II, he is earnestly considering the possibility of bringing Chrono Trigger back for a new generation.
"It’s been quite some time since Chrono Trigger’s release.
I absolutely want to do something with it in the future," Horii told Game Reactor.
He reiterated that frequent fan communication has placed the remake at the forefront of his mind, indicating a sincere interest in reviving the JRPG classic alongside Square Enix’s other remade titles.
The potential remake would join the ranks of Square Enix’s acclaimed remasters and remakes on the Nintendo Switch, a platform that has played host to celebrated updates of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles.
These modernizations have been warmly received, driving significant digital sales via the Nintendo eShop and introducing iconic adventures to both veteran fans and new audiences alike.
Chrono Trigger's legacy continues to shape the genre, with widespread recognition across critical retrospectives and a lasting influence on contemporary game development.
Square Enix's remakes have consistently demonstrated both fidelity to the original vision and technical reimagining for modern players—qualities the most dedicated Chrono Trigger fans hope to see realized should the project move forward.
While Square Enix has not officially announced a Chrono Trigger remake for the Nintendo Switch or any other platform, Yuji Horii’s comments underscore both the enduring demand for the classic and a growing willingness within the company to explore its return.
As the gaming community awaits further news, Chrono Trigger’s potential revival remains one of the most anticipated developments in the ongoing tradition of JRPG remakes.
