Nintendo has officially begun unveiling new features for its upcoming hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2, giving fans a closer look at what to expect from the next iteration of one the company's most successful consoles.

In a short demonstration video released over the weekend, Nintendo showcased a notable enhancement to system navigation: mouse functionality integrated directly into the Joy-Con 2 controllers, designed to streamline and modernize the HOME menu experience. Building upon the user-friendly interface established with the original Nintendo Switch, the new Joy-Con 2 controllers introduce a dedicated mouse mode.

This allows users to navigate the Switch 2’s home menu by manipulating a cursor with the controller, similar to a computer mouse.

To activate the feature, players simply turn the Joy-Con 2 on its side and use the motion to move the cursor across the menu.

Selection of menu icons is achieved by pressing the L or R buttons, while the joystick allows for scrolling through various system options and menus. The feature was highlighted in a video posted on May 11, 2025, and was shown in action by prominent Nintendo insider OatmealDome, who shared a brief clip on Twitter.

According to the demonstration, the system’s cursor movements respond intuitively to the subtle tilts and slides of the Joy-Con 2, making navigation more efficient for players.

The ability to click and scroll fluidly mirrors desktop-style controls, potentially making system interactions faster and more comfortable for a broad user base. While this integration may not come as a major surprise to close followers of Nintendo’s innovative input solutions, it underscores the company's ongoing commitment to accessibility and user experience.

The newly enhanced Joy-Con 2 is positioned to provide familiarity for new users and flexibility for core gamers, particularly those accustomed to using mouse and pointer controls. Though Nintendo has yet to confirm if traditional USB mouse devices will replicate this functionality or if full mouse-and-keyboard support will extend to gameplay, having this feature integrated into Joy-Con 2 establishes a new standard for the platform’s user interface.

This could prove especially beneficial for titles with shooter mechanics, where pointer accuracy is essential. The Nintendo Switch 2, slated for release following years of anticipation, already promises additional hardware advancements, as reported in recent updates.

These include a battery charge limit feature aimed at reducing battery deterioration and reports suggesting future customization options for the Joy-Con 2.

As Nintendo continues to innovate, user-focused enhancements like mouse-style navigation reinforce the company’s legacy of merging accessibility and technology in its gaming platforms.
