Description

Playtonic Games, the acclaimed UK-based developer behind the Yooka-Laylee franchise, has officially confirmed that Yooka-Replaylee will release on Nintendo Switch 2 with a consistent 30 frames per second in both docked and handheld modes.

The announcement follows mounting anticipation for the remade platformer, which is scheduled to launch on October 9, 2025, and will be available both digitally on the Nintendo eShop and as a physical edition.

The development team addressed performance expectations earlier this week in a statement shared via social media.

According to Playtonic, the decision to target a steady 30fps was made after "limited time" with the Nintendo Switch 2 development kits prior to the game's release window.

They emphasized that this approach ensures "the best possible looking and seamless version of the game" is delivered to players from day one.

In their announcement, Playtonic made it clear that the door isn't closed on future optimizations.

The studio is already "investigating" the feasibility of introducing a higher frame rate mode on Nintendo Switch 2 after launch, pending further hands-on experience and optimization work with the hardware.

"To deliver the optimal visual experience and seamless gameplay, Yooka-Replaylee will be running at a consistent 30fps on Nintendo Switch 2, whether in handheld or docked configurations," stated a Playtonic Games representative.

"With our limited access to the development kits, our team is currently exploring the introduction of a performance mode as a potential post-launch update." Regarding pre-release access, Playtonic has clarified that a demo for Yooka-Replaylee on Switch 2 is not in the pipeline ahead of launch.

However, the developer acknowledged ongoing work to bring a playable demo to fans sometime after the game's official release. This challenge of limited access to Switch 2 development kits is not unique to Playtonic; numerous indie and third-party studios have underscored the logistical hurdles that come with early hardware adoption.

Despite these constraints, Playtonic remains committed to delivering a polished experience at launch and supporting the title with updates and additional content. Yooka-Replaylee's upcoming launch on Nintendo Switch 2 marks another milestone for Playtonic Games, whose titles have consistently attracted attention for their blend of colorful platforming and nods to classic genre favorites.

With the Switch 2's expanded capabilities and a promise of ongoing improvements, both long-time fans and newcomers have much to anticipate this October.
