Sega has officially announced that Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is headed to the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch on June 5, 2025 — coinciding with the release of Nintendo’s highly anticipated new console.
Known as the definitive edition of the critically acclaimed prequel in the storied Yakuza franchise, this new version is delivering substantial additions and enhancements, making it a key title for both longtime fans and new players exploring the series for the first time on a Nintendo platform.
Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by SEGA, Yakuza 0 originally debuted in 2015 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, before expanding to platforms like Xbox One and PC.
Set in the vibrant underworld of 1988 Japan, Yakuza 0 serves as a prelude to the franchise’s first entry, offering a dramatic origin story for protagonists Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima.
The game has earned praise across the industry for its gripping narrative, unforgettable characters, and the signature blend of intense action and offbeat minigames that define the series.
The Director’s Cut for Nintendo Switch 2 is described by Sega as the most complete version to date.
Players can look forward to never-before-seen cutscenes that enrich the storyline, and a brand-new online four-player mode called 'Red Light Raid,' featuring up to 60 unlockable characters — a first for the series.
In addition to these gameplay enhancements, the Switch 2 edition will support expanded language options, adding French, Italian, German, and Spanish text, as well as a newly recorded English voiceover, further broadening the game’s accessibility to a worldwide audience.
Industry reviewers have long acknowledged Yakuza 0 as a high mark for the franchise.
Push Square described it as a blend of mature storytelling with unique side activities, stating in an 8-out-of-10 review that it combines “unapologetically mature themes and violence with brilliantly silly minigames and hilarious side quests, resulting in a thoroughly memorable experience.” The review highlighted that its cast and storytelling make it a must-play for fans of Japanese culture and games.
With the release of Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are poised to bring one of the most beloved chapters in the Yakuza series to an entirely new platform.
The game will be available digitally via the Nintendo eShop and on physical media at launch.
This release reinforces SEGA’s ongoing commitment to expanding its celebrated IP to broader audiences while leveraging the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to experiencing the definitive Yakuza 0 adventure, optimized for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware, this June.
