Yakuza Kiwami 3: Dark Ties Launches on Nintendo Switch 2, Marking Series Milestone

Yakuza Kiwami 3: Dark Ties officially marks a historic moment for the long-running Yakuza franchise, as Sega's critically acclaimed action-adventure game makes its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2.

This simultaneous launch on a Nintendo platform represents a significant evolution for the series, which previously had been closely associated with PlayStation consoles throughout its history. Developed by RGG Studio, Yakuza Kiwami 3 is an enhanced remake of the original Yakuza 3, delivering the franchise's signature blend of dramatic storytelling and brawler-style action.

The addition of the Dark Ties expansion further enriches the experience, offering players new content to explore.

Notably, Yakuza Kiwami 3 includes a curated collection of 12 classic Game Gear titles, giving fans a healthy dose of nostalgic gameplay alongside the modernized main adventure. In a recent interview with NikkeixTrend, series director Ryosuke Horii addressed the reasoning behind bringing Yakuza Kiwami 3 to the new Nintendo Switch 2 platform.

According to Horii, while the Switch 2’s demographic skews younger—which may or may not align immediately with the Yakuza audience—the decision to release on Nintendo’s latest hardware is part of a broader strategy.

"Many Switch 2 users are on the younger side, so it's uncertain how this will impact immediate sales for Yakuza," Horii explained.

"However, the game industry's focus has shifted to a longer-term model.

If we make the game available now, players might discover it years down the line.

We believe that expanding our audience today is an honest approach that helps foster future fans." This pragmatic outlook highlights Sega and RGG Studio's commitment to making the Yakuza franchise accessible to a broader range of players.

Over the years, Yakuza has gradually transitioned from its exclusive roots on PlayStation to embracing multi-platform releases.

Switch 2 owners have already seen the staggered arrival of earlier titles such as Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2, before the debut of Kiwami 3: Dark Ties. While the current Switch 2 library doesn't yet include entries beyond Kiwami 3, such as Yakuza 4-6 or the newer Like a Dragon subseries, RGG Studio appears content to build its audience on Nintendo platforms methodically.

Porting beloved titles is no small feat, but the studio’s emphasis remains on ensuring that as many players as possible have access to the games—a move that will benefit single-platform gamers who may not own multiple consoles. With Yakuza Kiwami 3: Dark Ties now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and other platforms, Sega and RGG Studio reinforce their evolving multi-platform strategy.

As the Yakuza series continues to expand its reach, fans new and old have much to look forward to, both for the present and in the years to come.
