During the recent Nintendo Switch 2 April Direct, Sega surprised fans by unveiling Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut for the upcoming hardware.
This announcement marks the arrival of one of Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s most acclaimed action-adventure titles on a Nintendo home console for the first time.
Yakuza 0 originally debuted in 2015 in Japan, and was later released in the US in 2017 to widespread critical acclaim.
The game explores the origins of long-standing series protagonists Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, offering fans a gritty, narrative-driven experience set in late-1980s Japan.
What sets this port apart is the "Director’s Cut" designation—a subtitle not previously associated with Yakuza 0.
Notably, the game’s original director, Kazuki Hosokawa, departed from Sega alongside series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi in 2021.
This naming choice might raise eyebrows among longtime fans, but it signals additional content and features in this new release.
Masayoshi Yokoyama, who currently leads RGG Studios, shared insights during the Direct Partner Spotlight: while the core gameplay will remain faithful to the original, the Switch 2 version will introduce new cutscenes to further enhance the story’s depth.
In addition, a brief showcase at the end of the announcement revealed a brand-new multiplayer mode, allowing players to engage in large-scale battles with friends—an exciting first for Yakuza 0 on consoles.
Players will also have the opportunity to control iconic antagonists previously unavailable as playable characters, offering a fresh layer of replayability.
While rumors circulated regarding the addition of an English dub for this version, Sega has yet to confirm or deny these reports.
However, fans can look forward to significant technical improvements thanks to the Nintendo Switch 2’s enhanced capabilities.
With support for 4K HDR output and up to 120 FPS, this edition of Yakuza 0 may well become the definitive version for console gamers.
These advanced performance specs promise a visual and gameplay experience matching or exceeding competing platforms.
Sega has not announced an official release date for Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut on the Nintendo Switch 2, nor have they detailed all of the game’s new features.
As anticipation builds, this port signals Sega’s commitment to bringing major franchises to Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
For now, Yakuza fans and Switch enthusiasts alike can look forward to revisiting the streets of Kamurocho with enhanced visuals, new gameplay options, and expanded story content when the Director’s Cut arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 and the Switch 2 eShop.
