Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Launches on Nintendo Switch 2 with Enhanced Performance and Online Features

Nintendo and Monolith Soft have officially released Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, now available digitally through the Nintendo eShop.

This enhanced edition of the acclaimed sci-fi RPG delivers a range of technical improvements and expanded online functionalities, reaffirming Monolith Soft’s reputation for ambitious open-world game design. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition transports players to the year 2054, a time when Earth has been devastated and humanity’s remnants flee aboard a massive colony ship.

After crash-landing on the mysterious planet Mira, players take on the role of a customizable protagonist leading a desperate fight for survival.

The game’s vast, interconnected environments remain one of its standout features, encouraging exploration through a combination of on-foot traversal and piloting Skells—giant mechanized suits capable of flight, transformation, and tremendous combat power. On Nintendo Switch 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X takes full advantage of the hardware’s capabilities.

When connected to a TV, the game supports resolutions up to 4K at a fluid 60 frames per second, while handheld mode delivers crisp 1080p visuals with the same smooth frame rate.

This marks a significant upgrade over previous releases, promising a visually richer and more responsive experience for both series veterans and new players. In a clear statement from Nintendo of America, the company emphasized the commitment to maximizing the RPG’s immersive qualities: “Our goal with this edition was to enhance every aspect of Xenoblade Chronicles X for Nintendo Switch 2, offering both improved performance and a broader multiplayer experience.” Online multiplayer is a core pillar of this re-release.

Up to 32 players can join squads to pursue shared objectives, such as item collection or hunting specific creatures across Mira.

Additionally, players can team up with up to three others in real-time battles against formidable enemies, or even enlist the avatars of fellow adventurers to aid in single-player progression. For those who previously purchased Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch, a dedicated upgrade pack is now available, granting access to the enhanced graphics and features without needing to repurchase the game. Collectors and physical edition enthusiasts can look forward to the retail release, scheduled for April 16, 2026.

The strategic timing allows Nintendo to cater to both digital-first and traditional audiences. With this ambitious generational upgrade, Monolith Soft and Nintendo once again reinforce their leadership in the RPG genre, combining epic narrative scope, technical excellence, and robust multiplayer support in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2.
