Worms Director’s Cut 1.5: Red Dwarf Map Announced for Amiga with Team17’s Support
Andy Davidson, the celebrated original creator of Worms, has announced the upcoming release of Worms Director’s Cut 1.5—a free, major update to the classic Amiga game.
Scheduled for launch in January 2025, this enhanced version demonstrates the ongoing passion within the retro gaming community and marks another milestone in the long-standing partnership between Davidson and the game’s publisher, Team17.
Davidson has been transparent about the development process since first teasing the 1.5 update earlier this month.
He has provided frequent updates via social media, reassuring fans that Team17 is fully aware of and supportive of his efforts to breathe new life into the iconic artillery strategy franchise.
"Team17 knows what I’m doing and they’re fully on board," Davidson confirmed, putting to rest any concerns about licensing or copyright issues.
One of the most exciting additions in Worms DC 1.5 is a meticulously crafted, dual-layer map based on the classic British sci-fi comedy series Red Dwarf.
The level not only recreates the external and internal environments of the eponymous mining ship but also pays tribute to several show icons: players will encounter the familiar visage of Holly (the ship’s computer, depicted by both Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge) and the Holly Hop Drive, a fan-favorite device featured in the series’ second-season finale, "Parallel Universe."
Davidson, himself a fan of both Worms and Red Dwarf since the 1990s, expressed enthusiasm for the crossover, describing the new map as a “dream come true.” Footage shared by Davidson showcases teams of worms battling across the ship’s detailed decks, with the green shuttle Starbug floating above an alien landscape.
The dual-layer structure of the map allows for intricate interiors rarely seen in previous Worms titles.
Red Dwarf originally launched on British television in 1988 and has since run for 11 series, a feature-length special, and a mini-series, building a cult following similar to the one attached to Worms.
The collaboration for Director’s Cut 1.5 reflects the dedication of both the Amiga development community and classic gaming fans worldwide.
Aside from the Red Dwarf-themed stage, the update includes another creative dual-layer level inspired by the Sega logo, highlighting the diverse range of contributions from Amiga community members.
Davidson has encouraged fans to look forward to the official release of Worms Director’s Cut 1.5 in early 2025, noting that all content will be available to download for free.
This ongoing commitment to both legacy hardware and beloved franchises underscores the enduring influence of Worms and the vibrant nostalgia-driven development scene.
Worms Director’s Cut 1.5 will be available exclusively for the Amiga platform, with more updates and previews expected ahead of its January launch.
Fans can stay updated through Davidson’s social media channels and Team17’s ongoing communications.
This release reinforces the Worms franchise’s reputation for creative community-driven content and ensures the original game’s legacy remains as lively as ever.
