Nightdive Studios announced at the PC Gaming Show 2026 that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will arrive this Winter across modern platforms, bringing the seminal 1998 stealth classic to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG).
The remaster consolidates material from the original Thief: The Dark Project and the 1999 Thief Gold expansion and is being rebuilt on Nightdive’s KEX Engine.
Background
Thief: The Dark Project was developed by Looking Glass Studios and released in 1998.
Widely regarded as a milestone in PC gaming, the title helped define first-person stealth design and advanced in-game audio through realistic sound propagation.
Players assume the role of Garrett, a master thief whose heists draw him into an escalating conspiracy.
Upon release, the game received positive reviews from outlets including Computer Gaming World, GameSpot, and PC Gamer.
What Nightdive is changing
Nightdive Studios—known for remasters of System Shock and System Shock 2—says the project will modernize the original experience with meaningful quality-of-life updates while preserving the game’s core design.
The studio has stated it will carefully update and improve graphics, textures, character models, cutscenes and animations to bring the title closer to modern visual standards without removing the source material’s identity.
Confirmed features
- Platform rollout: Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG.
- Source material: Includes content from Thief: The Dark Project (1998) and Thief Gold (1999).
- Engine: Rebuilt with Nightdive’s KEX Engine.
- UI and accessibility: Added weapon and item wheel, mission selector, and other quality-of-life improvements.
- Custom campaigns on PC: Support for fan-made campaigns and classic mission content.
What remains from the original
The remaster preserves signature gameplay elements: a dynamic visibility and sound system that allows realistic enemy detection, light and sound as core mechanics, stealth-focused combat using Garrett’s blackjack and ranged tools, and an arsenal including lockpicks, rope arrows and noisemakers.

Nightdive has provided a Winter release window but has not announced an exact launch date.
