Romero Games’ FPS Cancelled Amid Microsoft Cost-Cutting: Studio Praises Team’s Efforts Romero Games, the respected development studio helmed by John Romero—co-creator of DOOM and a former id Software luminary—has confirmed that its much-anticipated first-person shooter (FPS) project has been cancelled.

The studio had first announced the development of this new FPS title three years ago, capturing the attention of the gaming community and industry observers.

The game, which had backing from tech giant Microsoft, was slated for multi-platform release including potential launches on the Nintendo Switch and other major consoles, as well as on digital storefronts like the eShop and Xbox Store. The project’s abrupt cancellation comes as a result of Microsoft’s recent cost-cutting strategies.

As part of a series of internal changes, Microsoft decided to halt funding not only for Romero Games’ project but also for several unannounced games at other studios.

Romero Games would have released the new FPS under Microsoft’s publishing banner, had development been completed.

The announcement sheds light on broader industry trends as large publishers reassess portfolios and investments in 2024. In a statement addressing the development, Brenda Romero, co-founder of Romero Games and a veteran of the industry, communicated the news to the public through their social channels.

She explained, "We have some difficult news to share.

Last night we learned our publisher cancelled funding for our game, alongside several other unannounced projects at various studios.

This was a strategic decision at the highest levels within our publisher and not something we could foresee or influence.

If there had been anything we could have done to prevent this, we would have." Brenda Romero was quick to dispel concerns over the quality of the game or the performance of her team, emphasizing, "This outcome in no way reflects on our team's efforts or the quality of our project.

We achieved every milestone on schedule, consistently received positive feedback, and cleared all internal reviews with ease.

We remain immensely proud of the progress made and grateful for the dedication of our talented team—the best we’ve ever worked with." Looking ahead, Romero Games is actively considering its next moves while working to support its staff through this unexpected transition.

Brenda Romero noted, "Our priority right now is to support our team, many of whom have worked together for more than a decade, some for more than 20 years.

This is an extremely tough day for us all, but we are encouraged by the outpouring of support and are open to any opportunities for our outstanding professionals." Romero Games remains a prominent name in game development, with a portfolio that includes acclaimed titles and a legacy shaped by industry icons like John and Brenda Romero.

While the cancellation marks a significant setback, the studio’s commitment to quality and innovation ensures that it will continue to contribute to the medium, regardless of this challenging chapter. For those within the video game industry or fans of legendary designers like the Romeros, this story underscores the volatility and resilience present within the ever-evolving world of game development.
