F-22: Air Dominance Fighter Rerelease Announced for Steam with Major Enhancements

Digital Image Design Announces Modern Rerelease of F-22: Air Dominance Fighter on Steam Digital Image Design, the renowned British developer known for genre-defining flight simulators such as Robocop 3, TFX, and Wargasm, has officially announced the revival of its iconic 1997 title, F-22: Air Dominance Fighter, for a modern audience.

The enhanced rerelease is set for Steam later this month, published by MicroProse, offering both nostalgic fans and new players the opportunity to experience one of the most acclaimed combat flight simulators from the golden era of PC gaming. After a notable absence from the industry, Digital Image Design’s return was initially met with speculation and brief social media teasers.

Today’s announcement puts those rumors to rest, confirming not only the studio’s reemergence but also its commitment to updating classic experiences for current platforms.

F-22: Air Dominance Fighter is being “overhauled for modern systems,” with the development team citing nearly 100 technical fixes and gameplay improvements.

Major updates include support for widescreen displays, advanced 6 Degrees of Freedom (6 DoF) head tracking, crisp 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, expanded modding capabilities, and full compatibility with today’s hardware. The studio noted that this release is an important litmus test for the future digital revival of its back catalog, stating, “We are testing the waters with Air Dominance Fighter”—a clear indication that more Digital Image Design classics could be updated and published on Steam if this release is successful. First released in 1997, F-22: Air Dominance Fighter quickly established itself as a benchmark in simulation gaming.

The title received the “PC Simulation Game of the Year” award at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences’ Interactive Achievement Awards (now known as the D.I.C.E.

Awards).

PC Gamer’s Dan Bennett praised the game for its exceptional visual presentation and high fidelity simulation, awarding it an impressive 90%.

He noted that it stood out from contemporaries like NovaLogic and Mission Studios due to its convincing realism and the meticulous attention Digital Image Design devoted to simulating the F-22’s systems. With MicroProse onboard as publisher—another legendary name in simulation gaming—the rerelease marks a collaboration that honors the enduring legacy of the genre.

The updated F-22: Air Dominance Fighter is slated for launch later in the month.

Interested players can wishlist the game on Steam in anticipation of its release, preparing to revisit or discover a classic that helped define modern combat flight simulation.
