Description

Digital Extremes, the renowned studio behind the acclaimed online action title Warframe, has officially confirmed that development on a Nintendo Switch 2 version is now underway.

This announcement follows a period of uncertainty among third-party studios, many of whom have reportedly faced challenges securing developer kits for Nintendo’s anticipated next-generation console. Warframe, first launched on the original Nintendo Switch in November 2018, impressed both critics and players as a technical showcase for the hybrid platform, thanks largely to the expertise of Panic Button.

As Nintendo gears up for the Switch 2, the arrival of Warframe on its upcoming hardware marks a significant milestone, highlighting both the improved relationship between third-party developers and Nintendo, and the technical ambitions of future Switch titles. During a recent Warframe development stream, Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair shed welcome light on the studio’s progress.

In clear terms, Sinclair stated, "We are actively developing for the Switch 2 now.

It's no longer a secret — and thanks to the support from Nintendo, we're fully engaged and making great strides.

There's a lot of exciting work happening." Sinclair also commented on the impressiveness of the new hardware, noting the enthusiasm of Digital Extremes’ technical leaders: "The Switch 2 is an extremely impressive piece of kit.

Our technical leads are exploring its capabilities and are genuinely excited about what we can achieve." Further elaborating on the team's plans, Creative Director Rebecca Ford mentioned Digital Extremes’ intention to capture gameplay footage on Switch 2 hardware for an upcoming developer stream.

This move would give fans and industry watchers an early look at how Warframe leverages the advancements of Nintendo’s next console. Originally released in 2013 for PC, and since expanded to PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms, Warframe has remained a free-to-play success story.

The Nintendo Switch version, developed in collaboration with Panic Button, brought the game’s fast-paced action and expansive content to portable players, overcoming significant technical barriers in the process. With the confirmation that Digital Extremes now has access to Switch 2 dev kits and robust development on a next-gen port underway, anticipation among Warframe’s dedicated player base — and the broader Nintendo community — is set to grow.

The port represents not just the ongoing appeal of Warframe, but also the increasing sophistication and support for ambitious third-party projects on Nintendo hardware. As more details emerge and Nintendo prepares to reveal additional information about the Switch 2, fans can look forward to deeper insights during upcoming Warframe devstreams, and the promise of a next-generation online action experience optimized for Nintendo’s evolving ecosystem.
