Warframe, the acclaimed free-to-play action-shooter developed by Digital Extremes, has been a staple on the Nintendo Switch since its arrival on the eShop in November 2018.
With the advent of Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, longtime fans and newcomers alike are eager to see how Warframe might leverage the upgraded hardware.
However, Digital Extremes has clarified that a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version of Warframe is not currently in development—simply because the studio has yet to receive a development kit for the next-generation platform.
Since its launch, Warframe has amassed a broad player base on the Nintendo Switch, joining other major third-party titles that found success on Nintendo's hybrid console.
As the Switch 2 promises to deliver enhanced performance through high-speed cores and contemporary features, many in the gaming community anticipated a custom version of Warframe that could utilize these advancements.
According to developers at Digital Extremes, their enthusiasm is matched only by their anticipation of essential hardware from Nintendo.
"Our technical team is extremely eager to utilize the Nintendo Switch 2’s upgraded processing capabilities and other innovative hardware elements," a Digital Extremes spokesperson explained.
"There is currently a significant queue for development kits, and until we receive one, we are unable to begin work on a custom build specifically optimized for the system."
Earlier statements from studio leadership echoed this sentiment, expressing that the development team is "very much looking forward" to augmenting Warframe’s performance on the new console.
The team is particularly focused on harnessing faster load times and the additional processing cores that would benefit large-scale online experiences such as Warframe.
However, until Digital Extremes acquires the necessary development resources, Switch 2 owners will need to play the existing version, which remains fully functional on the next-generation hardware, but does not take advantage of its full capabilities.
Despite this delay, the dedicated Warframe community and Switch fans remain optimistic.
Digital Extremes confirmed its commitment to creating a tailored Nintendo Switch 2 experience as soon as it gains access to the required dev kit.
The company’s steadfast support for Warframe across multiple platforms sets a strong precedent, and the developer’s technical team is passionate about delivering a next-level experience to players as soon as Nintendo makes it possible.
For now, Warframe remains a top free-to-play title available on Nintendo Switch via the eShop, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Digital Extremes continues to provide regular content updates, reinforcing its position as a leader in the games-as-a-service space.
