PixelHeart, the independent publisher recognized for its dedication to reviving retro classics such as Gladmort, Shadow Gangs Zero, and Chronicles of the Wolf, has officially launched a Kickstarter campaign for a highly anticipated sequel to Visco's single-screen Neo Geo platformer, Bang Bang Busters.
The campaign, which is live now, is giving backers the opportunity to secure digital or physical copies of the new title across a variety of platforms, including modern hardware like the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, and Steam, as well as beloved retro systems like the Neo Geo AES/MVS and Sega Dreamcast.
Originally developed by Visco in the 1990s, the first Bang Bang Busters was planned for commercial release on the Neo Geo in 1994 but remained unreleased for over fifteen years.
The project was finally completed and distributed in 2010 after Neo Conception International collaborated with Visco to license and publish the game.
Subsequent releases expanded to the Neo Geo MVS, Neo Geo CD, and, in 2018, a Sega Dreamcast version produced by JoshProd.
The colorful platformer draws frequent online comparisons to titles like Toaplan's Snow Bros and AM Factory's Nightmare in the Dark, owing to its distinctive mechanics and eccentric presentation.
In Bang Bang Busters, players guide the bunny-like protagonists, Lazy and Refia, through a series of inventive stages to rescue their home planet Palua from an array of quirky foes, ranging from faux Santas to mummified enemies and one-eyed penguins.
Building on this foundation, the sequel aims to expand both the game’s whimsical universe and its core gameplay mechanics.
PixelHeart has stated its intention to “take the mechanics and scenario a step further,” with the story focused on the returning antagonist, Emperor Honey.
This villain’s latest plan involves transforming the universe’s monarchs into oversized mascots and imprisoning them within a new setting known as Happy Universe, a planetary amusement park.
Once again, it’s up to Lazy and Refia to journey through imaginative levels in order to liberate the captured kings and put an end to Emperor Honey’s schemes.
At the time of writing, the Kickstarter campaign has amassed €20,346 out of its €35,000 goal, with 26 days still remaining for interested fans to support the project.
Backers can secure the Digital pack for €12, tailored for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam, while collectors and retro enthusiasts can opt for various physical editions designed for classic hardware like the Neo Geo AES/MVS or Sega Dreamcast.
With PixelHeart’s proven track record of bridging retro charm and contemporary platforms, the Bang Bang Busters sequel is poised to honor the legacy of its Neo Geo roots while inviting a new generation of players to experience its unique brand of platforming action.
