NIS America and Nippon Ichi Software have set a release date for Village in the Shade, their new hand-painted farming sim coming to Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The game is scheduled to launch worldwide in retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop on 27 October 2026.

Village in the Shade places players in Kagatsu, a Japanese mountain village built around quiet, everyday life and hidden secrets.

According to the publisher's press release, the game combines classic farming-sim mechanics—planting crops, gathering resources, decorating a homestead—with a narrative bent rooted in local mystery and folklore.

NIS America will handle Western publishing duties while Nippon Ichi Software is credited as the developer.

The publisher outlined core gameplay and social elements, noting that players can customise their home by buying furniture and crafting fences and other items from materials gathered across the farm.

Village in the Shade also recreates traditional Japanese community events; the release highlights seasonal activities such as a summer festival and cherry-blossom viewing as ways to deepen relationships with neighbors and experience laid-back village life.

In more ominous language, the publisher warned there are rules players will encounter in Kagatsu: do not speak to strangers, do not leave the village, and avoid going out at night.

Rewriting that statement for clarity, the publisher advised players that the village maintains strict boundaries—interacting with outsiders, departing the community, or exploring after dark are explicitly discouraged within the game's narrative framework.

The release further explains that players may choose to uncover Kagatsu’s secrets at their own risk, or opt to respect the village rules and avoid darker corners of the story.

The game's announced features were presented with distinct headings in the press materials: a focus on home-making and crafting, festival-driven social mechanics, and a mystery-driven storyline that rewards exploration but cautions about consequences.

A trailer accompanying the announcement showcases the game's hand-painted art style and atmosphere.

Nippon Ichi Software is best known for long-running franchises such as Disgaea, while NIS America has a history of localising and publishing Japanese-developed titles in Western markets.

Village in the Shade’s October 27, 2026 release across Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, both digitally on the Nintendo eShop and in retail, places it on the calendar as a late-2026 entry in the farming-sim and narrative-adventure spaces.
