Description

Nintendo has rolled out Version 2.9.0 of the Nintendo 64 emulator app for Nintendo Switch Online, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to enhancing the classic gaming experience on modern hardware.

The update, which went live on the Nintendo Switch eShop yesterday, arrives alongside the much-anticipated addition of GoldenEye 007 to the Switch Online classic game library. With Nintendo Switch Online, subscribers gain access to a curated selection of retro titles from across Nintendo’s history, including the Nintendo 64 catalog.

The latest 2.9.0 update specifically addresses and resolves a long-standing issue affecting Yoshi’s Story, a beloved platformer originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997.

Previously, players encountering the boss known as Inviso faced graphical glitches, particularly with background objects failing to display correctly during the boss fight due to the transparency effects used for Inviso's design. According to the official release notes, the 2.9.0 update improves emulation accuracy, ensuring that the Inviso boss battle in Yoshi’s Story now displays as intended.

This fix restores a key visual element to the game, enhancing both the challenge and the charm that fans remember from the original hardware.

Such attention to detail exemplifies Nintendo's ongoing effort to maintain fidelity with the original game experience while taking advantage of the Nintendo Switch's enhanced capabilities. The update also coincided with the high-profile return of GoldenEye 007, the legendary first-person shooter, to Nintendo Switch Online.

Announced during a recent Nintendo Direct, GoldenEye 007 had been one of the most requested additions to the Switch Online service.

Its release further highlights the growing value of Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack, which brings classic games to new and returning fans alike. Nintendo’s continuous rollout of updates, including technical improvements and new title additions, reflects its strategy to keep the Switch Online platform both robust and relevant for gamers.

By refining the Nintendo 64 emulator and delivering fan-favorite titles alongside important fixes, Nintendo ensures the legacy of its classic catalogue endures for the Switch generation. Version 2.9.0 of the Nintendo 64 app is now available to all Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.

Players can download the update directly from the eShop and experience the improved performance in Yoshi’s Story, as well as access recently added classics like GoldenEye 007.
