Coffee Stain Publishing has confirmed that Iron Gate's multiplayer survival hit Valheim will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide via the Nintendo eShop on 9 September 2026.

The port brings the game's procedurally generated survival action to Nintendo's portable home console successor with full cross-play support and controller and platform-specific enhancements.

Background and launch context

Valheim is a cooperative survival and exploration game built around procedurally generated worlds and Viking-inspired themes.

The title supports sessions for up to 10 players and has evolved significantly since its Early Access debut on PC, receiving three major content updates and several smaller patches that expanded biomes, weapons, armour and building options.

For the Nintendo Switch 2 release, Coffee Stain Publishing says the game will include eight fully realised biomes at launch, among them the Mistlands, the Ashlands and the Deep North.

Platform features and technical additions

The Nintendo Switch 2 edition adds platform-specific features aimed at making the game feel native to the console.

Confirmed features include:

- Full cross-play between platforms, allowing Switch 2 players to join friends on other systems

- Touch-screen support for menus to streamline inventory and crafting on the handheld

- Advanced haptic feedback through HD Rumble 2

- Gyroscope aiming for improved ranged combat control

Gameplay and systems included at launch

Coffee Stain Publishing has outlined the core mechanics and systems that will ship with the Switch 2 version.

These include a massive procedurally generated world with distinct biomes, stamina-based combat that emphasises preparation and skill, a food system that grants buffs rather than punishing players for skipping meals, intuitive crafting and a flexible building system that accounts for structural integrity.

Multiplayer options include player-hosted dedicated servers and unlimited world creation, with enemies that scale in difficulty.

Developer perspective

Iron Gate creative director Robin Eyre reflected on the game's trajectory, saying the studio was surprised by the scale of the player community that formed around Valheim and that moving toward a major milestone felt both thrilling and nerve-racking.

Eyre added that the studio focused on making the Deep North update a satisfying conclusion to Valheim's ongoing development arc.

Availability

Valheim will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 on 9 September 2026.

Further details, including system requirements for Switch 2 hardware and any day-one patch notes, will be published by Coffee Stain Publishing and Iron Gate as the launch approaches.
