OFF, one of the most influential indie RPGs of the past two decades, is preparing for its highly-anticipated release on the Nintendo Switch in 2025.
Originally developed by Mortis Ghost and renowned for its surreal story and distinctive style, OFF has developed a cult following since its initial launch in 2008.
The upcoming improved version, published by Fangamer, aims to introduce this classic to a new generation of players on the Nintendo eShop, while also enticing returning fans with exciting updates—including a brand new soundtrack composed in part by Toby Fox.
Toby Fox, celebrated for his work on critically acclaimed titles Undertale and Deltarune, has openly credited OFF as a significant inspiration for his own projects.
In a recent update from Fangamer, it was revealed that Fox is contributing multiple tracks to the soundtrack for the upcoming Switch release.
The publisher detailed that its initial attempt to license the original soundtrack from Alias Conrad Coldwood, the composer for the 2008 version, proved challenging.
Alias Conrad Coldwood expressed hesitancy to sign off on reusing his music, ultimately indicating that he was comfortable stepping back to allow a new score to be created.
Faced with the opportunity, Mortis Ghost reached out directly to Toby Fox to join the revamped project.
Both Fox and Mortis Ghost recognized the original soundtrack’s importance in defining OFF’s unique atmosphere and player experience.
The responsibility of maintaining that mood—while offering something fresh—posed a notable creative challenge.
Toby Fox provided insight into his creative process for OFF’s Switch version in a candid statement.
He described the daunting effort that went into composing fresh battle themes and boss music, revealing that he engaged in extensive research, even enlisting fellow musician Carlos for a jazz-inspired piece designed to serve as source material.
Ultimately, Fox collaborated with acclaimed Japanese composer Camellia—best known for his contributions to Beatmania and Dance Dance Revolution—to remix and develop the new musical direction.
"Honestly, I felt the weight of living up to fan expectations," Fox told the OFF the RPG website.
"I explored a variety of jazz inspirations from the 1920s, commissioned original jazz tracks to sample, and tried creating several different songs from scratch.
In the end, I brought in Camellia to help remix my first track, resulting in multiple versions that I think players will really enjoy as they explore the new game."
Fox’s commitment to the project has gone beyond mere composition.
In a community-focused decision, he announced that he would offer his tracks for free following OFF’s Nintendo Switch launch, further underscoring his passion for both the game and its community.
Preview music, including the battle theme "White Meat" composed by Fox and Camellia, is now available for fans to experience ahead of the official release.
OFF for Nintendo Switch is expected to launch this year on the Nintendo eShop, expanding the storied RPG’s reach while amplifying it with the talent and vision of renowned contributors.
With this reimagined soundtrack and enhanced gameplay features, the OFF remaster is positioning itself as a must-play entry in the Nintendo Switch RPG lineup.
