Ubisoft Announces New Subsidiary for Major Game Franchises with Significant Tencent Backing
In a strategic move poised to reshape its approach to game development, Ubisoft has unveiled the formation of a dedicated subsidiary tasked with overseeing the development and expansion of three of its biggest franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six.
This major announcement comes during a week when Nintendo has also been making headlines with new Nintendo Switch news and reveals, highlighting a period of intense activity across the gaming industry.
The initiative is significantly bolstered by a major investment from Tencent, the Chinese video game giant.
As part of the agreement, Tencent is investing €1.16 billion—estimated at approximately 25%—for a minority stake in the newly formed Ubisoft subsidiary, which is valued at around €4 billion.
This partnership aims to accelerate Ubisoft's transformation, focusing on the creation of robust, multiplatform gaming ecosystems designed to be evergreen, ensuring prolonged relevance and engagement for years to come.
Ubisoft’s leadership has made clear that this move is meant to sharpen the company’s focus and agility.
The binding agreement with Tencent follows a detailed evaluation of strategic options, with the Ubisoft Board of Directors unanimously approving the transaction on March 27, 2025.
According to CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot, establishing this new structure marks a foundational shift in Ubisoft’s operating model.
Guillemot explained that the initiative will position Ubisoft to "be both agile and ambitious," enabling the company to "build strong gaming ecosystems designed to become evergreen, grow high-performing brands, and create new IPs powered by cutting-edge and emerging technologies."
The new subsidiary will benefit from its own dedicated leadership team and autonomy, charged with enhancing the global reach and longevity of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.
Additionally, Ubisoft has pledged ongoing support for other cornerstone franchises such as Ghost Recon and The Division.
This new structure will also bring increased focus on narrative-driven solo experiences, the expansion of multiplayer offerings through more frequent content releases, and the integration of free-to-play options and expanded social features.
This development reflects Ubisoft’s continued commitment to innovation on leading platforms, including the Nintendo Switch and upcoming hardware.
The publisher's recent launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and rumors of new projects for Nintendo’s next-generation console underscore its dedication to delivering high-quality content across both current and future platforms.
With Tencent’s substantial financial infusion and a sharper organizational focus, Ubisoft is poised to reinforce the long-term success of its iconic franchises, enhance value for shareholders, and continue delivering memorable experiences that meet—and exceed—player expectations in the evolving landscape of AAA game development.
