Ubisoft Restructures Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team, Shifts Focus to Rayman Remake and Other Projects

Ubisoft, one of the most prominent names in the video game industry, recently made headlines with the decision to disband the development team behind "Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown." While this move initially caused concern among fans and industry observers, new information has emerged suggesting a future for the talented team members within the company—particularly as Ubisoft pivots to major new projects, including a Rayman remake.

"Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown"—released earlier in January 2024 for platforms including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC—was lauded for revitalizing the beloved series with its action-platformer gameplay and fresh narrative.

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the team successfully blended classic Prince of Persia mechanics with modern design, earning critical acclaim and strong player engagement across digital stores, including the Nintendo eShop. According to a report from Insider Gaming, most of the developers affected by the restructuring have transitioned to work on a potential Rayman remake, as well as other internal projects within Ubisoft.

A small number have also joined teams dedicated to the long-anticipated "Beyond Good & Evil 2" and the next entry in the "Ghost Recon" franchise.

These decisions reflect Ubisoft's ongoing reassessment of its development priorities, particularly amid the evolving landscape of its flagship series like "Assassin’s Creed: Shadows." Notably, sources close to the Rayman remake claim that Michel Ancel—the original creator of both Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil—will serve as a consultant for the project.

While Ancel is not directly involved in day-to-day development, his advisory role brings both recognition and controversy.

In 2020, French media reported on concerns regarding Ancel’s management style, citing a challenging work environment during his tenure at Ubisoft.

Shortly before these reports surfaced, Ancel publicly announced his retirement from the industry.

Ubisoft has since emphasized its commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture. While the circumstances behind the Prince of Persia team's dissolution were disappointing for fans, there is a positive outcome: the majority of employees were not laid off, but rather reassigned to key projects.

The Rayman remake—should it come to fruition—would mark a highly anticipated return for one of Ubisoft’s most iconic characters, celebrated for its artistry and platforming challenges.

Meanwhile, ongoing development of "Beyond Good & Evil 2" and new titles in the "Ghost Recon" series continue to be high priorities for the publisher. Ubisoft’s decision to reallocate its development resources highlights both the challenges and the opportunities of navigating today's competitive games market.

With ongoing support for major properties on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and a commitment to high-quality releases through channels such as the Nintendo eShop, Ubisoft remains determined to shape the next era of interactive entertainment.

As the company continues to adapt, industry followers will be watching closely for official announcements and developments on these storied franchises.
