2026 Pokémon World Championships: Tsunekazu Ishihara Opens Pokémon XP at Moscone Center

The Pokémon Company chief executive Tsunekazu Ishihara formally opened the 2026 Pokémon World Championships and accompanying Pokémon XP this week in San Francisco.

The three-day event runs Friday, 28 August through Sunday, 30 August 2026 at the Moscone Center and marks the Pokémon franchise’s 30th anniversary since its 1996 debut on Nintendo’s Game Boy platforms.

The World Championships program blends competitive play and public-facing experiences.

Organizers are staging the Video Game Championships (VGC) tournament across the weekend, with the World Championship Finals scheduled for Sunday at the Chase Center.

VGC Day 1 coverage was available as a livestream, offering fans and remote viewers access to matches and event highlights.

In his opening remarks, Ishihara welcomed onsite and online attendees and highlighted the dual purpose of the weekend: competition and celebration.

Paraphrasing his address, Ishihara thanked everyone present and watching from around the world, saying he was pleased that players and families could gather to celebrate Pokémon’s milestone anniversary.

He noted the weekend would feature memorable activities at Pokémon XP and culminate with the Championship Finals at the Chase Center, and he praised competitors for their dedication, saying their effort and passion inspire the next generation of players.

He encouraged participants to take pride in contributing to Pokémon’s legacy and wished them luck in their battles.

Context and historical notes: Pokémon originated in 1996 as a pair of titles for Nintendo’s Game Boy, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, and has since expanded into trading card games, animated media, and annual competitive circuits.

In recent console generations, the Pokémon video game competitive scene has centered on Nintendo platforms, with Nintendo Switch releases forming the backbone of VGC seasons.

The 2026 World Championships continue that tradition by assembling players, judges, and community members for in-person competition and programming.

Coverage and reporting

The event’s schedule, including VGC brackets and festival programming at Pokémon XP, was shared by event organizers ahead of the weekend.

Live broadcasts for tournament play and select panels were made available through the championships’ livestream channels.

Journalists and industry observers noted the gathering’s significance for the competitive calendar and for Pokémon’s 30th-year celebrations.
