Spyro 3.5 Return to the Forgotten Realms romhack released for Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS1)

A new, fan-made romhack for the 2000 PlayStation title Spyro: Year of the Dragon has launched.

Created by speedrunner Jeremy Thompson in collaboration with content creator and developer HWD405, Spyro 3.5 Return to the Forgotten Realms was announced on July 7, 2023 and released the following weekend.

The project built on HWD405's earlier Spyro 3 randomizer work and was developed over nearly six months.

Major changes and features

The romhack rearranges and alters core gameplay elements of the original PS1 game.

According to the project's announcement and accompanying materials, developers moved or functionally changed more than 135 eggs across the game.

Roughly one-third of the game’s levels received full texture replacements, and there are significant lighting and skybox updates across multiple areas.

The mod also modifies over 100 text boxes and adds new music and voice assets.

In journalistic terms, the team says the project began as a sequel to HWD405’s Spyro 3 randomizer but expanded into a larger, more ambitious effort that pushed the team’s creative and technical limits.

Target audience and competitive incentives

Spyro 3.5 is positioned toward experienced Spyro players and speedrunners.

The release includes a $250 bounty pool to be split among the first players who complete specified challenges.

The bounties cover feats such as finishing the Atlas and completing all Skill Challenges, with full rules and challenge definitions published in a shared Google Doc linked from the project’s announcement.

How to download

As noted by the developers, the romhack is available now.

Download instructions and installation steps are provided in the announcement video’s description; the download package includes a README.txt with further details.

The bounty rules and additional challenge information are hosted in the linked Google Doc.

Platform context

Spyro 3.5 targets the original PlayStation (PS1) ROM of Spyro: Year of the Dragon and is intended for players using tools and emulation that support romhacks and randomizers.

This romhack is distinct from commercial re-releases such as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which later appeared on modern platforms including the Nintendo Switch.

Developers and community

The project credits HWD405 and Jeremy Thompson and builds on existing community efforts around Spyro randomizers and speedrunning.

With the release live and bounties active, the romhack is expected to circulate among competitive players and modding communities interested in challenging Spyro content.
