Description

Micro Mages Maker Empowers Players with NES-Level Creation and ROM Export Functionality Morphcat Games, the renowned indie developer behind the critically acclaimed NES platformer Micro Mages, has announced an exciting new venture in collaboration with Novasplore Games.

This partnership will introduce Micro Mages Maker, a game-changing level editor inspired by the success of Super Mario Maker, designed to bring new creative possibilities to fans of classic platforming games and the NES homebrew community. Originally released in 2019, Micro Mages pushed technical boundaries by fitting a full multiplayer platformer into a mere 40KB without needing additional memory mappers.

Developed by the duo of programmer Julius Riecke and artist/level designer Nicolas Bétoux, the title stood out for its technical feats and fast-paced multiplayer gameplay.

Its popularity led to subsequent releases on platforms such as Evercade, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam and itch.io). Now, Morphcat Games and Novasplore Games are building on that legacy with Micro Mages Maker.

According to the game's official Steam page, Micro Mages Maker will let players design and edit their own platforming stages, then share those creations seamlessly with others in the community.

A signature feature, highlighted by the developers, is the ability to export levels as NES ROM files.

This unique capability allows users not only to play their creations in-game, but also to run them on NES emulators or authentic hardware via flash carts—bridging the gap between modern PC tools and retro gaming hardware. Micro Mages Maker isn’t just a level editor: it comes bundled with the original Micro Mages game, its Second Quest DLC, and a set of 20 brand-new, pre-made multiplayer levels.

True to its roots, it supports up to four players, encouraging solo play as well as cooperative or competitive adventures.

Level creators can make use of a broadened toolbox, which includes new enemy types like Tele Bubble Goats and Jumpy Goblins, increasing the variety and replayability of custom stages. An official summary on Steam invites players to “become the mastermind behind new traps and challenges,” fully integrating new and legacy enemies while delivering a robust suite of design options.

Players are encouraged to build, share, and play new levels, making use of multiplayer support to tackle platforming challenges together or compete for high scores. At the time of writing, no release date for Micro Mages Maker has been confirmed.

However, the game is available to add to wishlists on Steam, providing an easy way for fans to stay informed about announcements and launch information.

As the project progresses, the development team assures regular updates for engaged players eagerly awaiting this significant addition to both the NES homebrew and indie platforming scenes. Stay tuned for more details as Morphcat Games and Novasplore Games bring retro creativity back to life, empowering a new generation of players to craft their own NES adventures on modern platforms.
