Independent animator Mitchell Hammond has released a new Metal Gear-themed clip on YouTube that has captured attention as Konami increasingly returns focus to the franchise.

The Metal Gear series, created by Hideo Kojima, originated on MSX hardware in the 1980s; Kojima left Konami in 2015, and Konami announced a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, in 2023 while also compiling classic entries in the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, released October 24, 2023 on platforms including Nintendo Switch via the eShop.

Hammond’s latest short, titled "Metal Gear Warhead Activate," shows a grizzled pilot booting up a retro MSX-style game before a mechanized threat engages off-screen.

The animation leans on MSX-era aesthetics and references the look and tone of Kojima’s early work, which first appeared on MSX systems in the late 1980s with titles such as Metal Gear (1987) and Snatcher (1988).

Hammond has posted Metal Gear-inspired footage for more than a year, and the new clip was uploaded to YouTube as a standalone piece.

Hammond explained the upload was completed some months earlier and intended originally to be part of a longer sequence; he released the shorter clip because finishing the full segment would take considerably more time.

That pragmatic choice helped the work reach a wider audience sooner.

The clip has prompted positive responses across social channels and fan communities, where users have praised Hammond’s animation quality and fidelity to the franchise’s visual and tonal hallmarks.

Fan-created media like Hammond’s often draws attention back to official releases and collections; Konami’s recent activity, including the Master Collection Vol. 1 and the 2023 remake announcement, has already renewed interest in Metal Gear on modern platforms.

For readers tracking Metal Gear developments, Hammond’s videos are available on YouTube and offer a clear example of how independent creators continue to celebrate and reinterpret legacy franchises.

His work serves as a reminder of the series’ enduring design language, while Konami’s official releases and projects keep the franchise visible on current consoles and digital storefronts.
