TimeSplitters Rewind Brings Classic FPS Action Back with Early Access Launch
After years of anticipation and uncertainty regarding the future of one of gaming’s cult-classic franchises, TimeSplitters Rewind has officially launched in Early Access for PC.
This fan-driven project seeks to rekindle the spirit of the iconic TimeSplitters series, originally popularized by Free Radical Design on the PlayStation 2, and bring its fast-paced, time-hopping action to a new generation of gamers. The early access release comes on the heels of a disappointing chapter for the franchise.
Efforts by Embracer Group and Free Radical Design to deliver a new official TimeSplitters installment ultimately fell short, leading to the closure of the studio once more.
Steve Ellis, co-founder of Free Radical Design, recently reflected on the failed revival attempt as a "significant disappointment." Ellis also expressed empathy for younger developers who, as he put it, were unable to see their first major project come to fruition. With the likelihood of an official continuation currently slim, the TimeSplitters community has turned its attention to TimeSplitters Rewind.
Enthusiastically crafted by dedicated fans, this project has been in development since 2013.
It is designed as a comprehensive homage, offering a "greatest hits" package of maps, modes, challenges, leagues, and storyline moments from across the original TimeSplitters trilogy.
The project is not affiliated with Nintendo Switch or eShop platforms at this time, focusing exclusively on the PC experience. Launched in Early Access on November 23, TimeSplitters Rewind’s current version includes the complete campaign from the first TimeSplitters game, now fully playable in cooperative mode.
Players can explore 28 carefully recreated maps, tackle 32 challenging objectives, unlock 96 distinct characters, compete with 41 different weapons, and enjoy a wide selection of game modes.
As with many early access titles, users should be aware that some features are still being finalized and occasional bugs may occur.
Future updates aim to further expand and polish the experience, continuing the project’s legacy of community-driven development. Remarkably, TimeSplitters Rewind is offered completely free of charge and is the result of years of volunteer work.
It has garnered support from franchise legends, including David Doak, co-founder of Free Radical Design and a key figure in the original TimeSplitters titles, who has actively promoted the fan project via social media channels such as Twitter (now X). For those eager to relive the nostalgia or introduce themselves to the time-bending shooter, TimeSplitters Rewind stands as a remarkable example of what passionate fans can achieve.
While the future of TimeSplitters as an official franchise remains uncertain, this ambitious fan creation ensures the legacy of one of gaming’s most beloved FPS series endures.
