Super Mario Galaxy Movie Sequel: New Voice Cast Revealed Ahead of 2026 Premiere

Nintendo and Illumination have ramped up excitement for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie sequel, debuting a final official trailer during today’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct.

The highly anticipated sequel is slated to hit theaters on April 1, 2026, continuing the blockbuster legacy that began with Illumination’s original adaptation of Nintendo’s iconic Super Mario franchise. The latest trailer offered fans a fresh glimpse of the Mushroom Kingdom in action, blending familiar scenes with entirely new sequences that promise a cinematic experience faithful to the Super Mario Galaxy games on Nintendo Switch and Wii.

Notably, the preview highlighted the in-movie debut of the classic character Wart, following a recent teaser poster, and cemented anticipation for his role in the adventure-packed sequel. Following the trailer, Illumination CEO Christopher Meledandri shared a major update on the voice cast, announcing three celebrated actors joining the production.

Stepping into the role of Wart is acclaimed Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzmán, whose prolific career encompasses standout performances in Paul Thomas Anderson films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love.

Guzmán also holds a notable place in gaming history as the voice behind Ricardo Díaz in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Another addition is Issa Rae, known for her award-winning HBO series Insecure and recent appearances in American Fiction, The Hate U Give, and Barbie.

Rae will voice the Honey Queen, the beloved matriarch of the Honeyhive Galaxy, further expanding the breadth of well-rounded characters from the Nintendo universe. The most surprising casting announcement came with Donald Glover—also known as the musician Childish Gambino—voicing the ever-popular Yoshi.

Glover’s impressive resume spans creating and starring in the critically acclaimed series Atlanta, key roles in Community and Solo: A Star Wars Story, and voicing Simba in Disney’s modern The Lion King.

This marks a fresh creative take on Yoshi, positioning him as a central—and now vocal—character in the sequel. Alongside these on-screen developments, Nintendo is actively engaging the community through the Nintendo Today! app.

Beginning tomorrow, users can obtain exclusive digital collectible cards simply by logging in daily, with a total of 40 unique designs to collect—a nod to Nintendo’s longstanding tradition of interactive fan rewards.

Additionally, moviegoers who check in at participating theaters will unlock digital wallpapers for their smartphones and gain access to themed digital photo frames, allowing for memorable snapshots tied to the movie launch. With both Nintendo and Illumination pulling out all the stops for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie sequel, the 2026 release is set to be a major event in both box office and gaming culture.

Fans of Super Mario, Nintendo Switch, and the ever-expanding Nintendo cinematic universe have plenty to look forward to, both on screen and across the digital Nintendo ecosystem.
