Description

Psycho Dream, a cult classic from the Super Famicom era, is set to make a landmark return with its first-ever official English localization, Ratalaika Games has announced.

This long-awaited re-release will arrive across multiple modern platforms—Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Steam—bringing a new audience to this 1992 action platformer from Riot, a subsidiary of Telenet Japan.

The English-localized version is scheduled for release in Q3 2025 and marks a significant milestone for retro gaming fans eager to experience this title in an accessible format. Originally launched exclusively in Japan in 1992, Psycho Dream stands out thanks to the creative efforts of composer Michiko Naruke, who later became renowned for her work on the Wild Arms series, and Kenichi Nishi, a developer known for acclaimed projects like Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, L.O.L.: Lack Of Love, and Chibi Robo.

Set against a compelling cyber-fantasy backdrop, Psycho Dream follows two protagonists—Ryū and Maria, expert 'debuggers'—tasked with venturing into a demon-infested virtual world to rescue a young girl named Sayaka, who has become trapped in a new form of immersive entertainment. Despite its innovative premise, Psycho Dream received mixed reviews in its original era.

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu scored the title at 18 out of 40, while the May 1993 edition of Super Play import reviews gave it a critical 33%, noting the game's simplicity and drawing analogies to underwhelming performance in a fast-paced industry.

The title was once slated for a North American SNES release in 1994 by Renovation Products, rebranded as Dream Probe, and even reviewed by Electronic Gaming Monthly before the localized project was ultimately cancelled, likely due to its lukewarm reception in Japan. Interest in Psycho Dream was revived in February 2021, when Nintendo included the original Japanese version in its Nintendo Switch Online service’s SNES game library.

However, that iteration remained untranslated, limiting accessibility for non-Japanese-speaking players.

Ratalaika Games' forthcoming release marks the first occasion Psycho Dream will be presented with an official English translation across all major digital storefronts, including the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam. A Steam page is already live, allowing fans to add the title to their wishlists ahead of its anticipated Q3 2025 launch.

With the upcoming English-localized release, a new generation of players will finally have the opportunity to experience one of the Super Famicom’s more enigmatic action platformers, complete with its original soundtrack and story, as envisioned by its celebrated creators.
