Hiryū no Ken Collection Announced for PC: Classic Famicom Martial Arts Games Return in Japanese-Only Retro Compilation

Nihon Game, a renowned developer and publisher in the Japanese video game industry, has officially announced the upcoming release of the Hiryū no Ken Collection for PC.

This new retro game compilation, launching exclusively in Japanese, is scheduled to debut via Steam on April 15th, 2026, and is set to feature four classic entries from the long-running martial arts action series that launched in arcades during the mid-1980s.

The Hiryū no Ken franchise, which originated with the 1985 arcade game Hokuha Syourin Hiryū no Ken—better known internationally as Shanghai Kid—built a loyal following across multiple Nintendo platforms over the years, including the Famicom (the Japanese version of the NES), Game Boy, Super Famicom (SNES), and Nintendo 64.

The series is best recognized outside Japan for its NES localizations as Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll and Flying Warriors, both of which combined action-platformer and fighting game elements inspired by martial arts traditions.

The newly announced Hiryū no Ken Collection will focus specifically on four Famicom releases: Hiryū no Ken (1987), Hiryū no Ken II: Dragon no Tsubasa (1988), Hiryū no Ken III: Gonin no Ryusenshi (1990), and Hiryū no Ken: Special Fighting Wars (1991).

While the first three titles reached North America in altered forms, the fourth entry—originally planned for Western release as Fighting Simulator: World Champ—remained exclusive to Japan, although a prototype surfaced through an online leak in 2024.

According to the official Steam listing, the compilation is described as a package featuring foundational Hiryū no Ken games, each delivering a distinct blend of gameplay.

These titles incorporate side-scrolling martial arts combat, one-on-one fighting mechanics, and unique character progression systems.

A major highlight is the series’ innovative 'Shingan System,' which requires players to strategically target body points during attacks and defenses, introducing a deeper layer of tactical gameplay.

Beyond its gameplay, the Hiryū no Ken series weaves a narrative involving the resurrection of a great demon and the protagonist's struggle against the villainous "Dragon Fang" organization, tasked with saving the world from domination.

The collection offers players a chance to experience these interconnected storylines and mechanical evolutions from the franchise’s early years in a single, cohesive package.

The release of Hiryū no Ken Collection signifies the series’ first return to the market since the Game Boy-exclusive Hiryū no Ken Retsuden, which debuted in Japan on December 22, 2000.

As the collection will only offer Japanese-language support, it primarily targets retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors seeking authenticity and nostalgia.

Fans interested in revisiting these iconic martial arts titles can add the Hiryū no Ken Collection to their Steam wishlist now.

A trailer showcasing the restored classics is available on the official Steam page.
