A fan translation patch for the Japan-exclusive PS3 release of Like A Dragon: Ishin!
(Ryū ga Gotoku: Ishin!) has been published by a modding team led by well-known translator and hacker MajDima.
The patch makes the original PS3 disc edition of the samurai-era Yakuza spin-off accessible in English and is compatible with both native PlayStation 3 hardware and the RPCS3 emulator.
Like A Dragon: Ishin! is a samurai-era entry in Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio’s long-running franchise that centers on the historical figure Sakamoto Ryōma.
The title originally launched in Japan for PS3 and PS4 and was the series’ second game set in the samurai period, following 2008’s Like A Dragon: Kenzan!.
A 2023 remake of Ishin! later received a worldwide release on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; that remake featured several recast roles and gameplay adjustments compared with the original PS3 version.
The newly released fan patch is the result of collaborative work credited to MajDima (hacking, textures, editing), toyotasupra2 (translation of cut content, texture assistance, testing), and jurxd (testing).
According to the team’s summary of the effort, the project involved overcoming numerous technical hurdles in the PS3 build, including bugs and engine limitations.
The lead contributor said the team ultimately completed a full translation for the PS3 edition after extensive troubleshooting and noted that a few minor defects remain where deeper engine analysis would be required; those issues are reportedly minimal and do not significantly affect playability.
The patch is distributed via ModDB and is intended for use with the retail disc version of the PS3 game, though it was also developed to function under the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator.
