(Ryū ga Gotoku Kenzan!) is now playable in English thanks to a fan translation patch.
Originally released in Japan for the PlayStation 3 in 2008 and developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio with Sega as publisher, Kenzan! never received an official Western localization and remained a PS3 exclusive until this community effort.
The patch was produced over roughly two years by a team that includes veterans from previous Yakuza fan projects, notably Madjima — known for English patches for the Japan‑only PS3 versions of Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 0 — and a developer who publishes previews under the name jurxd.
A preview video posted to jurxd’s YouTube channel demonstrates what the team has completed: translated menus, localized mini‑games (including Iroha Karuta), added fonts, and in‑game dictionary entries intended to help Western players navigate Edo‑period terminology.
In a 2022 interview with OneMoreGame, Yakuza executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama and chief producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto explained why Ishin! received an official remake ahead of Kenzan!.
They told the outlet that a larger number of fans requested an Ishin remake, and that remaking Kenzan would require substantial changes to the storyline and a commensurate investment of time and budget — factors that made an official Kenzan remake less feasible at the time.
When asked about the role of AI in the fan translation work, jurxd and other team members were explicit about their workflow.
They said the translation and coding were completed by the team without the use of AI, and that the project’s quality improved over the two years as the team revised earlier sections; they also invited players to report bugs or translation issues so the patch can be refined.
The fan patch is distributed via established mod hubs and can be found on ModDB; interested players can view the project page and the YouTube preview for technical details and installation notes.
Because this is an unofficial patch, it is not available through official storefronts such as the PlayStation Store or Nintendo eShop.
For fans of the series and players curious about historical Yakuza entries, the English patch offers a rare chance to experience Kenzan!’s Edo‑period storyline, which follows Miyamoto Musashi assuming the identity Kiryu Kazumanosuke in Kyoto’s Gion district.
