Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes PC-8801mkIISR Release Confirmed for Nintendo Switch eShop on September 12

Nintendo Switch continues to celebrate the legacy of Japanese computer gaming, with D4Enterprise bringing another beloved classic to its EGGCONSOLE lineup.

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, the pivotal turn-based RPG developed by Nihon Falcom, is officially set for release on the Nintendo Switch eShop on September 12, 2024.

This version marks the first appearance of the original PC-8801mkIISR edition on Nintendo's popular hardware, making this a significant milestone for both fans of retro gaming and RPG history. Originally debuting in 1989 on Japan's NEC computers, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes quickly established itself as a foundational title in Nihon Falcom’s storied RPG portfolio.

The game’s influence is notable, as it was the first entry in the long-running Dragon Slayer series to adopt a turn-based format—an innovation that set the groundwork for what would eventually become The Legend of Heroes series, still thriving today. Following its initial release, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes was ported to a broad array of systems including the NEC 9801, FM Towns, MSX2, TurboGrafx-CD (PC Engine CD-ROM²), Sharp X68000, Sega Mega Drive, Super Famicom (including Satellaview), PC, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn.

However, Western audiences primarily experienced the title through the TurboGrafx-CD version—an edition that earned a nomination for Multimedia Game of the Year at the 1993 Electronic Gaming Awards. The narrative centers on the young prince Selios, who seeks to reclaim his kingdom of Farlane after it falls to a monstrous invasion and internal betrayal.

Players guide Selios across the fantasy realm of Elasta, assembling a diverse party to challenge the usurper Agdam and restore the royal lineage.

Although the protagonist was renamed King Logan for the Western release, the Switch eShop edition preserves the authenticity of the original Japanese version, with language support including Japanese text complemented by English menus and introductory tips. As with previous titles in the EGGCONSOLE series, D4Enterprise remains committed to faithful reproduction.

"Our goal is to deliver an authentic experience, providing the original game content with helpful guidance for new players through English menus and startup instructions," D4Enterprise stated in their product documentation. For devoted fans of Nihon Falcom, retro gaming enthusiasts, and Nintendo Switch collectors, this release serves as a rare opportunity to access an influential piece of JRPG history in its purest format.

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes launches on the Nintendo Switch eShop worldwide on Thursday, September 12, 2024, reinforcing Switch's status as a top platform for classic Japanese computer games.
