Dragon Slayer IV: The Drasle Family Launches on Nintendo Switch EGGCONSOLE Series in Japan

D4 Enterprise is set to bring another beloved classic to modern audiences, as Dragon Slayer IV: The Drasle Family lands on Nintendo Switch through the EGGCONSOLE retro reissue series.

Launching in Japan on April 11th, this marks the MSX2 version’s debut on Nintendo’s hybrid system, celebrating the enduring influence of Japanese computer games on retro enthusiasts and newer players alike. Originally developed by Nihon Falcom, Dragon Slayer IV—widely regarded as a foundational entry in the action-adventure genre—released in 1987 for the MSX and MSX2 computing platforms, and also saw a Famicom launch in Japan.

Western audiences may recognize the title from its 1989 NES localization, Legacy of the Wizard, published by Broderbund.

This version later found its way to the Nintendo Switch as part of the Namco Museum Archive Vol.

2 package, further cementing its place in gaming history. The EGGCONSOLE initiative by D4 Enterprise focuses on revitalizing classic Japanese computer games for the Nintendo Switch via the eShop, predominantly showcasing legendary PC-88 titles until now.

Dragon Slayer IV: The Drasle Family is a significant addition as it becomes the first MSX-related release within the EGGCONSOLE collection, signaling a potential expansion to cover more computing platforms in future updates. Dragon Slayer IV invites players to take control of the Drasle family—a group of intrepid woodsmen embarking on a perilous quest through sprawling dungeons in search of the mythical Dragon Slayer sword.

Each of the five playable characters possesses unique strengths and limitations, demanding strategic thinking and party switching, which can only be done by returning to the family’s house in-game.

This innovative mechanic, combined with intricate level design, has made the title a favorite among fans of complex, exploration-driven adventures. According to D4 Enterprise, the MSX2 port will launch on the Japanese Nintendo eShop on April 11th.

Consistent with previous EGGCONSOLE rollouts, an international release is anticipated shortly after, initially offering the game with Japanese-language text.

For reference, prior EGGCONSOLE series entries have followed a similar staggered availability model. With Dragon Slayer IV: The Drasle Family joining the EGGCONSOLE series, Nintendo Switch continues to serve as a vibrant platform for both new and classic gaming experiences, enabling modern access to seminal titles that defined earlier generations.

Fans of Nihon Falcom and retro gaming aficionados alike can look forward to exploring this iconic adventure on contemporary hardware.
