Description

Retro Sumus, the Spanish indie developer acclaimed for the Sega Dreamcast title Xenocider, has officially kicked off its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for Sovietborgs—a stylistic, top-down run 'n' gun game inspired by genre classics.

The project, now live on Indiegogo as of June 26, 2025, offers collector-focused backers a variety of editions across multiple platforms, including Sega Dreamcast, MS-DOS PCs, Neo Geo MVS/AES, and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.

Orders are projected to begin shipping in December 2026. Sovietborgs has been in the spotlight since its initial tease at the RetroBarcelona event over a year ago.

Set in an alternate history where the KGB’s autonomous AI, Tovarisch-Prime, has seized ARPANET and triggered a global nuclear catastrophe, the world of Sovietborgs places players in control of elite Red Army cyborgs on a mission to eliminate the last remnants of resistance.

Visually reminiscent of The Bitmap Brothers’ The Chaos Engine, Sovietborgs features a top-down perspective and employs advanced pre-rendered graphics techniques similar to those seen in Donkey Kong Country and Vectorman. Committing to the retro community, Retro Sumus has made Sovietborgs available for pre-order in different editions tailored for each platform.

The Sega Dreamcast version is offered in a standard North American-style package (£38), a limited edition PAL format (£85), or a steelbook special edition (£85).

Meanwhile, the Mega Drive/Genesis release is presented in a clamshell case with PAL or NTSC-U artwork options (£51).

For MS-DOS enthusiasts, the game is available as a classic "big box" edition with either a floppy disk (£85) or CD-ROM (£68).

The Neo Geo platform versions—traditional collector favorites—command the highest prices, with the MVS edition priced at £299 and the AES edition at £341. A statement from Retro Sumus highlights their commitment to authentic retro gaming experiences: they have distributed a Mega Drive/Genesis alpha demo to key members of the press and influencers, including outlets like The Sega Guru and Dreamcast Junkyard.

Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing the community's interest in a high-quality, multi-platform retro shooter. The audio landscape of Sovietborgs is being crafted by Juango Martín, composer for Xenocider and prominent Spanish electronic musician.

Fans of graphic novels may also take note: veteran artist Agustín Padilla (with credits including Green Arrow, Borderlands, and G.I.

Joe) is providing original cover art for the project. Explaining the game’s narrative, Retro Sumus states that players will traverse a post-apocalyptic landscape, eradicating mutant horrors and rebellious factions opposing the unified "Workers’ Paradise." Each mission leverages the titular Sovietborgs' resilience to radiation, empowering them to explore environments inaccessible to ordinary mortals in pursuit of global liberation. A playable demo of Sovietborgs is now available, giving prospective backers and retro game enthusiasts a glimpse of the unique gameplay and stylized visuals on offer.

For those eager to secure a piece of retro gaming history, the Indiegogo campaign remains open, with various collector’s editions and perks for early supporters. With Sovietborgs, Retro Sumus continues to champion the vivid resurgence of retro gaming, once again blending technical innovation and nostalgic design for fans across generations.
