Nightmare Busters Rebirth Kickstarter Surpasses Funding Goal: HD Revival Confirmed for Nintendo Switch and More Nightmare Busters, the cult-classic SNES run 'n gun, is making a triumphant return.

This revival comes from publisher Pix'n Love Games and Aurora Game Studio, who launched a Kickstarter campaign for Nightmare Busters Rebirth—a modern HD remake—on May 21, 2025.

In a remarkable show of support, the campaign reached its €60,000 funding target in just one day, underscoring the enduring popularity of this retro gem. Developed by Aurora Game Studio in partnership with Pix'n Love Games, Nightmare Busters Rebirth is being designed for a wide array of platforms including Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC via Steam.

Backers have multiple options to support the project, starting with a €30 digital deluxe edition.

This edition includes a copy of Nightmare Busters Rebirth for the platform of choice, a digital original soundtrack, credit mention, exclusive access to a dedicated Discord channel, and a collection of digital wallpapers.

For collectors and physical media enthusiasts, the campaign offers a €45 physical edition for consoles, which comes bundled with all digital perks and a Flynn-themed keyring.

A premium €70 collector’s edition is also available, featuring additional physical items such as a compact disc soundtrack, acrylic standees, a 32-page art book, and more. The Kickstarter campaign extends beyond the modern remake.

For fans of classic hardware, a special SNES Ultimate Edition is being produced.

This edition updates the original 16-bit release with bug fixes and new game modes, delivered on an authentic SNES cartridge.

This version is available individually at €70, or as part of a comprehensive €200 package that includes extra merchandise and both classic and modern versions of the game.

According to official campaign details, the SNES Ultimate Edition is slated to ship by year’s end, while Nightmare Busters Rebirth targets a 2026 release window. Nightmare Busters dates back to its initial development in 1994 by London-based Arcade Zone.

Although completed in the mid-90s, it did not see commercial release on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) until December 2013.

The original game follows the adventure of twin leprechauns, Flynn and Floyd, as they battle to save their world from the nightmarish villain Tyrant.

Over the years, the game gained a reputation among collectors and retro enthusiasts, often being cited for its engaging gameplay, cooperative mechanics, and distinctive art style. Announcement of the modern remake first surfaced in April 2021, with Pix'n Love and Aurora Game Studio sharing early development assets and outlining plans for revamped visuals, redesigned levels, new music, an updated user interface, competitive two-player modes, and features aimed at the speedrunning community.

Although progress appeared to stall—apart from a rare demo appearance at France’s Animasia festival in 2023—interest has been reignited with this successful Kickstarter push and the recent unveiling of a new teaser. In a statement regarding the Kickstarter milestone, the developers explained that while public updates were sparse, full-scale development began in earnest only two years ago.

Pix'n Love Games and Aurora Game Studio expressed excitement about the renewed momentum, openly stating that "2025 will be the year of Nightmare Busters!" Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to experiencing this classic reborn, with both digital and physical releases planned for Nintendo Switch and other major platforms.
