Nintendo has tied its newly released Star Fox entry on the Switch 2 to a limited-time Tetris 99 event, offering fans a themed reward and a set of Switch icons priced with Platinum Points.

The cross-promotion arrives as interest in Nintendo's latest console title grows, and follows a day-one patch that enabled online features for Star Fox on the Switch 2.

Tetris 99 background

Tetris 99 is an online, competitive battle royale Tetris title for Nintendo Switch, originally launched in February 2019 as a Nintendo Switch Online exclusive and developed by Arika.

Nintendo runs recurring competitive events called Maximus Cups; the next one, the 55th Maximus Cup, is themed around Star Fox and will run in July 2026.

Event details and unlockable theme

Nintendo confirmed the 55th Maximus Cup will begin on July 10, 2026, starting at 12:00 a.m.

PT, and will run through July 13, 2026.

Players who participate in the online event and earn at least 100 event points will unlock a special Star Fox-themed Tetris 99 theme.

Nintendo’s announcement explained the event will include Star Fox-inspired Tetrimino designs, background art and music drawn from the Switch 2 release.

Switch icons and pricing

Alongside the Tetris 99 event, Nintendo released a set of Star Fox-themed Switch user icons in multiple waves.

Wave 1 was available beginning June 24, 2026; subsequent waves run weekly through July 22, 2026.

Individual icons are priced at 10 Platinum Points each, while backgrounds and borders cost 5 Platinum Points each.

Nintendo stated these icon elements are available only for a limited time.

Nintendo also published an official Star Fox game trailer ahead of the Tetris 99 event.

The company issued a day-one patch for Star Fox on Switch 2 that activates online functionality and additional features on launch.

For players looking to claim the Tetris 99 theme, participating in matches during the July 10–13 Maximus Cup and reaching the 100-point threshold is required.
