Tekken 8 on Nintendo Switch 2: Bandai Namco Weighs Business Potential Amid Porting Challenges
With the global success of Tekken 8 and the ever-growing anticipation surrounding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the possibility of pairing these two heavyweights has become a topic of industry interest.
Tekken 8, developed by Bandai Namco and lauded for its dynamic gameplay and high-end visuals, launched on January 26, 2024, to critical acclaim.
The game stands as a showcase of technical achievement, earning high scores from outlets like Push Square, which awarded it a prestigious 9 out of 10, describing it as “the franchise at its bombastic best.”
The Nintendo Switch 2, while not yet officially detailed in terms of technical specifications by Nintendo, is already drawing attention for its stronger hardware and a notable release schedule featuring ports unthinkable on its predecessor.
As the possibilities for broader third-party support grow, speculation naturally gravitated toward Tekken 8—one of the genre’s most prominent titles.
In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada addressed the matter head-on.
Harada acknowledged the potential of bringing Tekken 8 to Nintendo’s next-generation hybrid console, describing the option as both intriguing and commercially sound.
He explained that due to current market success, Switch 2 represents a smart business opportunity to expand the game’s audience.
"From a business perspective, releasing Tekken 8 on the Switch 2 could significantly enlarge our player base," Harada said, framing the move as an attractive proposition for the franchise’s continued growth.
However, Harada was clear about the hurdles involved.
Porting Tekken 8 to Switch 2 would not be a straightforward process; it would necessitate substantial development effort to optimize the title for Nintendo’s hardware.
"The amount of effort required to adapt the game for the platform would be extensive," Harada remarked, making it clear that such an undertaking comes with considerable challenges for the development team.
At present, no plans have been finalized, and Harada emphasized that there are no official announcements to be made regarding Tekken 8’s arrival on the Switch 2.
The director’s remarks offered fans valuable insight into the considerations that shape third-party releases on Nintendo platforms, especially in the context of major, graphically demanding games initially designed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
For Bandai Namco and Tekken 8, reaching a larger audience through the Nintendo eShop could represent a defining next step—especially as the game navigates ongoing community discussions and feedback following its Season 2 update.
Whether or not Tekken 8 ultimately arrives on Switch 2, the publisher’s careful consideration signals a commitment to both quality and broadening the series’ appeal on future Nintendo hardware.
