The remaster brings the classic JRPG to modern hardware with updated presentation and a suite of quality-of-life improvements while preserving the original’s distinctive story and combat identity.
Max: leader of the Shileska Freedom Army
In the trailer, Bandai Namco positions Max as the commander of the Shileska Freedom Army, a resistance force dedicated to deposing Balir, the autocratic ruler of Celestia.
The publisher highlights Max’s larger-than-life reputation by referring to him as "Max the Invincible." Bandai Namco also notes that Max has a limited vocabulary and frequently substitutes unfamiliar words with the phrase "that thing," a characterization that shapes his dialogue and personality in the remaster.
Setting and story context
Tales of Eternia Remastered returns players to Eternia, a world split into two isolated realms: Inferia and Celestia.
The narrative begins in the village of Rasheans in Inferia, where protagonists Reid Hershel and his childhood friend Farah Oersted meet a mysterious girl named Meredy.
Their journey to uncover Meredy’s origins escalates when the party learns a global catastrophe called the "Great Fall" threatens both realms.
Using the elemental spirit power of Greater Craymels, Reid and his allies must avert disaster.
Combat and systems: A-LMBS and improvements
The remaster retains the franchise’s signature Aggressive Linear Motion Battle System (A-LMBS), which supports varied Artes, continuous combos, and real-time coordination between party members.
Bandai Namco emphasizes fast-paced 2D combat that allows players to chain attacks and manage party synergy in dynamic encounters.
To modernize the experience, Tales of Eternia Remastered adds several accessibility and convenience features: destination markers to streamline navigation, an option to disable random enemy encounters, and a high-speed mode for auto battles.
Players can also toggle between graphical and sound modes to switch between the remaster’s updated presentation and the nostalgic feel of the original release.
Additional character coverage and trailers
Bandai Namco has also shared character trailers for Reid, Farah, Keele, and Chat as part of the remaster’s promotional rollout.
The Max trailer is available now, and Tales of Eternia Remastered will arrive digitally on the Nintendo eShop and in retail formats for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch on October 15, 2026.
