Take-Two Interactive Pauses Borderlands 4 Development for Nintendo Switch 2

Take-Two Interactive Pauses Borderlands 4 Development for Nintendo Switch 2 Take-Two Interactive, the renowned publisher behind major franchises such as Borderlands and NBA 2K, has confirmed a significant development update regarding the much-anticipated Borderlands 4 for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

The company has officially decided to pause work on porting Borderlands 4 to the next-generation Nintendo platform, shifting its immediate development efforts elsewhere. Borderlands 4 generated substantial excitement following its reveal as a key third-party title featured in the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 presentation.

Gearbox Software founder and president Randy Pitchford participated in both the Direct event and a subsequent Creator’s Voice video feature, reaffirming the game’s presence on Nintendo’s portable home console successor.

Initially, Take-Two Interactive had committed to releasing the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 on October 3, 2025.

However, just a week before the planned launch, the game’s release was postponed indefinitely. In a statement to Variety, Take-Two Interactive spokesperson Alan Lewis explained, “We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU.

Our focus continues to be delivering quality post-launch content and ongoing improvements to optimize the game.” Lewis emphasized the company’s ongoing partnership with Nintendo, noting, “We’re continuing to collaborate closely with our friends at Nintendo.

We have PGA Tour 2K25 coming out and WWE 2K26 [for Switch 2], and we’re incredibly excited about bringing more of our titles to that platform in the future.” When the initial delay was announced, Take-Two Interactive stated, “We do not take this decision lightly, but are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development and polish time to do that.” The publisher also highlighted plans to better synchronize the release with the addition of cross-save functionality, recognizing its importance to the community.

“Our hope is to also better align this release with the addition of cross saves, which we are working on and recognize is very important.

We will update you all on the new release timing once we’ve fully adjusted our plans,” the statement continued. In line with Nintendo’s standard policy, all digital pre-orders of Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 were canceled following the announcement.

There has since been limited communication from Take-Two or Gearbox Software about future progress on this port, leaving fans questioning the ultimate fate of Borderlands 4 on the platform. Despite this setback, Take-Two Interactive reassures its commitment to the Nintendo Switch 2 ecosystem.

The company’s ongoing collaboration is evident through the upcoming launches of PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26 for the new console.

As the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to garner strong third-party support, the industry will be watching closely for updates on Borderlands 4 and further titles from Take-Two Interactive.

For now, eager fans must await new developments regarding the franchise’s future on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
