Nintendo opened its latest Nintendo Direct with a specially recorded orchestral performance to mark The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary.
The music showcase highlighted a new Triforce-themed medley that nods to the franchise’s history on Nintendo platforms, from the original Famicom release in 1986 through to modern entries available on Nintendo Switch.
Composer Koji Kondo, who has worked on The Legend of Zelda series since the original 1986 title, provided context for the arrangement.
Kondo said he has long written music to support Zelda’s colourful characters and immersive worlds, and noted that the series’ sound has evolved from the early days of limited Famicom audio channels to the full orchestral arrangements possible in recent games.
He explained that the new opening arrangement was created specifically for the 40th anniversary and is structured around the Triforce virtues of Wisdom, Power and Courage, weaving together a medley of familiar themes and building musical tension as it progresses.
Nintendo also announced a global concert tour dedicated to The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary.
According to the company, the concert series will begin in Tokyo in January, continue with a North American leg starting in February in Chicago, move to Europe with a London start in April, and reach Australia in May with a performance in Melbourne.
Nintendo described the shows as spanning nostalgic tunes and modern melodies from across the franchise to celebrate four decades of Zelda music.
The orchestral Triforce medley was released alongside the Nintendo Direct presentation and is available to view on Nintendo’s official channels.
