The expansion adds a new coastal area, Hardshell Brook, and expands the game’s post-conflict story with fresh quests, bosses, gear and gameplay features aimed at fans of the studio’s hand-drawn action-RPG.
What’s included in Blood and Brine
- New area: Hardshell Brook, a scenic coastal locale that introduces a sea-focused narrative strand.
- Quests and bosses: 11 new quests and 10 new bosses for Tails of Iron 2, expanding enemy variety and encounter design.
- New mechanics: A unique fishing mechanic that ties into the expansion’s aquarium-focused side story.
- Gear and audio: Nine new armor sets and newly composed original music.
- Narration: Series narrator Doug Cockle returns to provide continuity in voice work and storytelling.
The expansion’s story centers on Arlo and two sailors, Jaimie and Sam, whose ship was destroyed.
They propose a plan to build an aquarium that will attract visitors and finance ship repairs.
As players collect unusual aquatic creatures and grow the aquarium, new suspicions about the sailors’ account of events at sea come to light, driving the expansion’s mystery-led progression.
Indie crossover armor and collaborations
Blood and Brine also introduces the ‘Indie Heroes’ armor sets, crossover gear inspired by well-known indie characters.
Odd Bug Studio reimagined these designs in its signature hand-drawn style; featured inspirations include The Penitent One from Blasphemous, The Lamb from Cult of the Lamb, Dave from DAVE THE DIVER, The Crow from Death’s Door, Will from Moonlighter and Boom Boom from Beyond GalaxyLand.
Odd Bug Studio leadership framed the release as a community-focused gesture.
CEO Jack Bennett explained that the studio wanted to thank its player base by offering the story expansion free of charge and expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with a number of indie developers to bring the crossover armor to the Ratdom.
A release trailer accompanies the launch, and Nintendo Switch players can find Blood and Brine on the eShop.
