The original Super Smash Bros. was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999 and was developed by HAL Laboratory for Nintendo; this latest project targets PC audiences looking for an updated, moddable rendition of the classic fighter.
The port follows an earlier AI-assisted effort.
In May of this year, a developer known as JRickey released an AI-assisted PC port called Battleship, which received criticism online for accuracy and stability issues.
That project prompted discussion about whether a more manual, quality-focused recompilation would emerge.
The current effort is led by community developers SrBananaMan64 and Boopie.
According to comments accompanying the project's trailer, SrBananaMan64 emphasized that the new port is not an AI-driven approximation and was intended as a “better example” of what a recompilation should be.
They stated that initial work on the repository began in October 2024 under a developer named ZestyDev, who got the game running without enhancements.
When that repository stalled, SrBananaMan64 forked the project and later teamed up with Boopie, and development activity resumed in mid-September.
Since then, the pair report they have implemented numerous patches and refactored code to improve performance and compatibility.
They also note ongoing testing across different platforms and additional quality-of-life features remain to be completed.
As of the trailer release, there is no fixed launch date; the project is described only as “coming soon.”
A notable compatibility announcement in the trailer is support for the Smash Remix mod, a well-known fan mod that expands the original title with new characters, stages, items, and music.
The developers have reiterated that, in line with similar community recomps, no Nintendo-owned game assets will be distributed with the release; users will be required to provide their own legally obtained copies of the game.
This project will be of interest to players and modders active in the PC retro scene and those following community-led recreations of classic Nintendo titles.
The developers have published a trailer and commentary on their work; more concrete release information is expected to follow as testing and finalization progress.
