Route-16R Release Date: Sunsoft Announces Route-16R and Route-16 Collection for Nintendo Switch

Sunsoft has officially announced two Route-16 releases for Nintendo Switch: the new Route-16R and the Route-16 Collection.

Route-16R is slated to launch on August 6, 2026, while Route-16 Collection packages the original Route-16 and Route-16 Turbo for modern play.

Both Collection titles will be available as digital downloads on Nintendo Switch, and the Collection will receive a physical release in Japan that includes a collector’s box and special memorabilia.

A modern take on an 1980s arcade maze series

Route-16R is a brand-new entry that builds on the Route-16 series first seen in the 1980s.

Players drive the MAD X-R through maze-like stages, collecting money and avoiding enemy vehicles and monsters.

Sunsoft says the game updates the classic formula by letting players toggle between modern and classic visual styles at any time with the press of a button, and by introducing new combat and customization systems.

Sunsoft summarized the design goals in journalistic terms: "Route-16R reimagines the original maze gameplay with two complementary modes — a close-up Maze Mode and a high-speed Radar Mode — while adding transformation-based combat and player customization." The company also framed the inclusion of multiplayer as a first for the series, focusing on a local capture-the-flag mini-game.

What this means for Switch owners

The announcement positions Route-16R as both a nostalgic revival and a modern arcade update, with features aimed at both solo and local group play.

The Route-16 Collection preserves the franchise’s early arcade history on Nintendo Switch, while Route-16R brings new mechanics and accessibility to the series.

For players tracking retro revivals and Switch eShop releases, both projects are now confirmed and dated by Sunsoft.
