Maehiro emphasized that both the original and current development teams are hopeful to see these possibilities realized for the series' future. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, originally released on the Game Boy Advance in 2003, and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, which arrived on the Nintendo DS in 2007, both earned critical praise for their deep tactical gameplay and imaginative worlds.

However, neither title matched the landmark cultural impact of the PlayStation original.
