Onion Games Confirms Stray Children Nintendo Switch Release Date for Western Markets
Onion Games has officially announced that Stray Children, its highly anticipated childlike RPG, is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch in Western regions on October 30, 2025.
The acclaimed Japanese indie studio revealed the release date, confirming that fans will soon have access to this whimsical adventure via the Nintendo eShop.
Stray Children follows the journey of a young boy transported into the fantastical world of a retro RPG inhabited solely by children.
Drawing inspiration from Onion Games' previous work, most notably the cult classic PlayStation RPG Moon, the new title once again subverts traditional genre conventions and offers players an unconventional narrative experience.
This approach has become a hallmark of the Onion Games development team, comprised of veteran talents such as director and designer Yoshiro Kimura, art director Kurashima Kazuyuki, and composer Hirofumi Taniguchi.
The team’s collective credits span beloved titles including Rule of Rose, Chulip, Little King's Story, Chibi-Robo, and Super Mario RPG.
In Stray Children, players engage with characters in imaginative ways that echo the unique mechanics found in Moon.
Rather than resorting to standard combat, players can influence formidable adults—referred to as "Olders"—through empathetic interactions.
Options include making the Olders laugh, smile, or expressing affection, rather than defeating them through force.
These "Olders" are described by the developers as monstrous adults burdened by their insecurities and unresolved adult grievances, deepening the game’s themes surrounding childhood and the lost innocence of growing up.
Onion Games' storytelling is known for blending quirky humor with emotional depth, and Stray Children continues this tradition.
Players can expect to encounter a variety of unusual and memorable interactions as they try to help save the children from the world of the Olders.
The distinctive narrative style of Moon has served as inspiration for modern indie classics like Undertale, and the influence is apparent in Stray Children’s offbeat gameplay and heartfelt storytelling.
As October shapes up to be a crowded month for Nintendo Switch releases, the arrival of Stray Children stands out for fans seeking a singular RPG adventure.
With its retro-inspired visuals, inventive mechanics, and acclaimed development talent, Stray Children is poised to become a noteworthy addition to the Nintendo eShop’s growing library of indie RPGs.
The game will be available for download on Switch in Western territories starting October 30, 2025.
Stay tuned for more updates on Stray Children and further Nintendo Switch RPG releases throughout the year.
